In 1988, current owner Karl Ullrich and his business partner purchased the business from Fred de Jong, who had owned it for 18 years.
Ullrich has always loved cycling – so much so that, just as he was beginning his journey with Oak Bay Bicycles, he was also pursuing a career in professional cycling.

A dying art and street disorder: Long established Victoria business closing
“There’s vandalism, our vehicles are broken into, we’ve had people breaking into the store screaming and shouting.”

Local, provincial, federal. Just vote for whoever isn’t in office. Best we can do is slow down their pet projects as they only have the opposite effect. Most of all, vote in local elections. This is where most is happening and where there is the greatest disengagement.

I think the business could survive if it moved, but maybe the owner just wants to retire.
Another future location for a SOLID outreach facility.

No doubt he would have a successful LMIA if he applied.

This historic property, known by locals as the Bell Block, is located in the heart of bustling Oak Bay Village. For the first time in almost a century this iconic building is on the market. Six successful and established commercial units at street level and 8 residential apartment units on the upper floor generate substantial income. The property has been well maintained; recent updates include a newer roof (2010), newer electrical wiring, new boiler, asbestos removal, refurbishing of apartment units, many upgraded energy efficient windows, parking lot repaving and extensive brick repointing. Decommissioned oil tanks have been removed recently. Further information available only with signed NDA. Please do not approach tenants.

No what you do is tell council you are going to build affordable rentals so that you can get a 10 year tax break and a waiver on DCCs and amenities.
You then go and offer market rentals since nobody is ever going to check that you honoured your housing agreement anyways.

I know we've heard you mention this a few times, but which project or projects are you referring to that got approved as affordable rentals, but offered market units when completed?

The owners of a decades-old corner store in Victoria’s Chinatown have closed up shop for good, and a local history aficionado says it’s an iconic business gone.
“I know it from the 1960s on, so all my life, it’s been there,” said Charlayne Thornton-Joe, a coordinator at the Chinese Canadian Museum in Fan Tan Alley.
Quonley’s Gifts and Grocery at the corner of Government and Fisgard streets, next to the Gate of Harmonious Interest, officially closed this week, says Thornton-Joe.

Quonley's has been a major Chinatown fixture for as long as I can remember. It is a shame to see it close.

True, but I also believe we mostly went there back in the day mostly because:
A. they were open when other stores were closed
B. they sold illegal fireworks and firecrackers

Word on the street is that this is a lease dispute. Either the owner has another tenant lined up or else they know something about the market that others don’t.
