Good question. I guess Kustom may have received numerous such calls or visits to their yard since the story broke?

So here's a question, if Kustom and All-ways Towing are the same company, does Saanich contract either of them out as their hook of choice for traffic issues?

I believe Saanich uses them.  Victoria uses Totem I think.

All-ways is the company on contract to pull cars from our condo's lot in the event we need an illegally parked car removed.  This mess with Kustom reaffirms my stance on not calling them to have cars removed.

I wouldn't be surprised if most towing companies didn't operate under several 'brands'. You have the bad guy brand which impounds your car and the good guy brand which helps you when your battery is dead or you get stuck. If that is the case then I would imagine that the companies don't really car about what people think if they are towed.

If you're ever stuck and need a private tow, remember that Totem doesn't do private impounds so they have some ethics...

According to google maps, Rand Automotive is right next door to Kustom and All Ways. I wonder if that is where the mechanic who purchased the car for $2,000 works. I wonder how often cars at Kustom are seized for non-payment and then sold.

I curious as to how the seized vehicle gets insured ever again. Is it a salvage title now?

The criminals can switch the VIN plate from an identical wrecked vehicle.

I note there's a new facebook review on Kustom Towing's page siting the recent decision.  Nothing like 1 star reviews to build consumer confidence.

Not that easy as the vin is located in several locations including the computer in the car. A seized vehicle can be insured as a regular car by the new owner assuming that there is no damage.

The crooks have to apply to the government to sell off the vehicle so presumably some ICBC wizardry happens and the vehicle can be registered easily by the new owner. You don't really think that a government that sees the benefits of civil asset forfeiture would interfere with this process for a private company, do you?

Looks like the page is gone now...

Nope still there - now with a six comment discussion thread following attempting to defend the actions. (Note - on Facebook it's under All-ways & Kustom towing).

An international student who flew to Saudi Arabia for his father’s funeral and returned to find his BMW had been sold by Kustom Towing has been awarded $14,000 by the Victoria provincial small claims court.

Kustom/All-Ways up to their old tricks again:

I had just filled my truck up a day before a minor accident which had my truck towed to their yard. Wouldn't bother me so much but that was over $100 of gas gone. WTF?

Maybe they need a phone call asking for an explanation.
