I'm sure many miss the days when unruly passengers were summarily roughed up and thrown out of the bus. Political correctness isn't fun anymore.

Neither is assaulting people.

Maybe the roughing up of unruly passengers led to today’s soft approach?

In a move that's set to shake up commuter routines, BC Transit announced Aug. 20 it will discontinue Route 13, a popular bus line serving the University of Victoria (UVic) and Ten Mile Point areas. The change, part of a larger service update, will take effect on Sept. 3.

Route 13, which has long been a lifeline for students and residents in the affected areas, will be completely eliminated from the transit system. BC Transit cites the need to ‘better align service with demand’ as the primary reason for this significant change.

Passengers who currently rely on Route 13 are being advised to use Route 11 Tillicum Centre/UVic as an alternative. According to BC Transit, Route 11 overlaps with most of the current Route 13 path, which should minimize disruption for many commuters.

So if you are uninformed, you might say "that's too bad".

^ Read the above, it literally had THREE passengers per day in the discontinued area of the route.

Many agree with Ukrainians assaulting the Russians now. It's called "self defence". Soft approach would have bullies take over everything.

Others would suffer if bus service cut

I am concerned about the proposal to reduce bus service near the encampment on Pandora Avenue.

Although drivers face a difficult situation and experience distress driving through these areas we cannot underserve the stops close to the area without disrupting the access to the local Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction offices.

I am a recipient of funding from the ministry, and I need a bus stop close by the offices in order to be able to access said funding.

B.C. Transit serves the public, and not just those who can afford to avoid the area. Certainly I have felt uncomfortable about the open drug use and threat of violence while waiting in the area to access the ministry building — and I deserve the opportunity to access the services safely as well — but not serving the area isn’t a solution to the problem; it’s simply avoiding it.

I hope B.C. Transit can be a partner with the city council to help those experiencing homelessness, but it shouldn’t be by shutting access.

There should be two bus stops on that block, the cleanest and safest bus stops in town.

We lose if we shut the one down.

The solution should be 24/7 policing on that block. The upcoming social housing tower should have included a community policing kiosk, and funding from the province to staff it.

Victoria lost when it elected Lisa Helps as mayor 10 years ago. It's been downhill ever since.

We don’t have bus service, I was told once by a business owner in Sooke that he likes Sooke kids and doesn’t not want to hire them, but depending on what their availability for rides is, if they’re bus specific, he kind of considers them unreliable. Well, how does that help our problem?” she said.

Are there really kids of working age that cannot find any way to travel a couple km to work without a bus or a ride?   Most people can walk about 5kmh.

How's the bike/pedestrian infrastructure in Sooke (don't go there much), is it safe enough a parent would let their kid ride/walk it?

There’s a pretty good trail system in Sooke, so you can walk off the main streets if you want to but there is no sidewalk infrastructure like in Saanich and beyond, for the most part. Definitely poor cycling infrastructure if you’re wanting even painted bike lanes.

A bus serves most of the area in red all day. The furthest for a walk to a bus stop in the area in red is 600-700 meters? All day transit, too. But outside of that circle there is nothing, and there’s a good chunk of people living outside of the core area of Sooke.

Generally we are talking about older teens here too. They should be responsible enough about riding and walking vs a 10 year old.

More people have become junkies. Hence the government is right after all.

Seriously, unruly passengers need to be kicked off the bus, and repeat offenders banned from riding transit. Enforcement is key.

CRD is voting on creating a local transportation commission, tonight.

Now traffic calming will be regionally pressured. No more speed bumps in Saanich, and clear sailing in Central Saanich.
