my neighbors have 10+ bird feeders around their yard. It's a mess. Squirrels, rats, birdseed all over the place.

No cats is the problem there.

The cats' guardian, Bruce Robinson, told CBC News he has about 298 cats, 15 of which are expected to have kittens in the coming days.

"I ended up in a crazy situation," he said.

______

He said people in the community starting dropping cats off on his property during the COVID-19 pandemic, and his pet cats ended up pregnant. He didn't have the money to get them spayed and neutered, and couldn't get outside support to do so.

"I made a bad decision," he said. "I thought I could handle the cats."

Drever said one cat can have three litters a year.

"So, in a seven-year timeframe, you're looking [at] up to 5,000 cats. So we're looking on the bright side — 280 isn't as bad as 5,000," she added.

Robinson said he wanted to give cats away, but said no one in the area wanted them.

"No one likes cats up here."

______

Robinson says he isn't working at the moment and can no longer afford to care for the cats. The animals go through 28 kilograms of cat food a day, as well as cat litter for his 10 litter boxes, he said, costing him upwards of $3,000 a month. He says he has gone without food himself in order to pay for cat food and litter.

The whale’s pregnant mother died after beaching itself Saturday morning while hunting and likely drowned about an hour later as the tide came in.

The Ehattesaht/Chinehkint First Nation is pulling together amid the death of a stranded orca and efforts to save its orphaned calf.

Chief Simon John said Tuesday the community continues to work with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, scientists, its own members and neighbouring First Nations to rescue the two-year-old orca from a shallow inlet near Zeballos. The whale’s 15-year-old mother drowned on Saturday after becoming beached on a gravel bar on Little Esperenza Inlet.

The young orca still hasn’t left the area and appeared traumatized as a rescue team tried to coax it out of the shallow lagoon to open water, according to marine scientist Jared Towers of Bay Cetology.

Orphaned orca remains stranded as rescuers consider all options

A 120-foot-opening, under a roadway span, and the changing tides that rush through it are proving to be a barrier in leading the calf out to open ocean.

Seems like capturing and selling it to sea world is the only viable option if it’s gonna die anyway.

Maybe we can recoup some of thousands of tax dollars already spent on this welfare project…

Rescuers continue effort to coax orphan orca out of Vancouver Island lagoon

About 10 vessels were inside the lagoon near Zeballos, using playback vocalizations of other transient killer whales, okoimi pipes and long ropes with floats and lines in the lagoon to try to move the calf to open water.

Attention-loving elephant seal returns to moult on the Gorge

Emerson is attracting the usual crowd of onlookers, prompting officials to put up temporary fencing around him

https://www.timescol...e-gorge-8544188

Cottrell told CHEK News he expects people will enjoy another sighting of Emerson and will be glad to know he’s doing well, but he wishes the seal would find a more remote spot to moult.

“We would prefer if he would haul out where he should be, more like Race Rocks or some isolated area where he can do his moult. But he is drawn to people, and his mother was also drawn to people,” he said. “We’re slowly trying to break that bond over time.”
