City council requests revisions to rooftop restaurant proposal
BY CAROLYN HEIMAN Times Colonist staff

It’ll be a toss-up as to whether tourists in Victoria see Mile Zero before they see Milestone’s.
The Inner Harbour restaurant wants to open a rooftop patio adjacent to the Visitor Information Centre.
The Provincial Capital Commission, which owns the space, has leased it to Milestone’s Grill & Bar. City council said this week it likes the rooftop patio idea but wants the cooking wagon to have a better design. Coun. Geoff Young said it resembles an “aluminum dumpster” and Mayor Alan Lowe said it looks like a “spaceship.”
Robert Randall, chairman of the downtown landuse committee, said his group doesn’t object to the use, but warns it may limit the PCC from making its own improvements to the area, including picnic tables and benches.
Brown-baggers also might not feel welcome in the area once a commercial place is operating, said Randall in a letter to council.
The rooftop patio would operate 13 weeks each year beginning June 25, Patricia Allabarton, Milestone’s operating partner, told council.
A public hearing on the proposal will be held, but council wants to see design changes before that. Allabarton said music would not be played in a patio area.
“It might be a good location for the bagpipes,” Lowe joked, referring to an Inner Harbour busker not always applauded for his music.
Coun. Chris Coleman, marketing manager for Milestone’s, abstained from the discussion.
Meanwhile, Tourism Victoria is concerned a restaurant operation will limit an expansion of the visitor centre for projected needs following the 2010 Olympics.
“We have no concerns about Milestone’s operating a rooftop restaurant, but as we approach 2010 we know that we don’t have enough room where we are and we would want to expand that,” said Helen Welch, vice-president of operations. Currently, 800,000 visitors pass through the centre at 812 Wharf St. each year.

How many roof top restaurants are there in the CRD. I know there is the Parrot house if it is still called that.

I don't know if I would call this a rooftop restaurant more of just another patio restaurant. The Parrot House is now Vista 18

Guess we never got that bump.
