Just inches to the theater building.  Also interesting, the first five floors appear to be massively thick, like 3x to 4x.  Is is just for added rigidity?

It almost seems like an aesthetic choice - albeit an expensive one. I can't recall if the structure is the same on the View Street side.

I think you're right.

I love that high-res rendering. It almost makes you feel like you're living at Yello.

I like the boxes. They add visual interest, unlike the typical flat surface of many new buildings.

With all of those extensions (boxes around the windows/balconies) that must make it a very expensive building to construct.

Hmmmmm.  I'm not sure if it does.  Some tricky forming, for sure.

Just 2 more floors on the View Street side and 6 on Yates Street. Why-oh-why are so many of the new downtown "high-rises" topping out at 15 floors? Who decided a table-top skyline was the best aesthetic for Victoria?

I wish this project could have been 2 taller & slimmer towers; more like Yates on Yates.

I don't know. For a mid-rise, shorter sort of infill building, this may work out great. Four 21 storey high rises in a more or less straight row would look totally goofy.

I am just always loathe to see another wide-scraper.

Wide buildings can work well if they are complimentary to high rise towers.

I will have to respectfully disagree. I generally hate the aesthetic of high-rise buildings that are as wide (or wider) than they are tall. At least Yello runs North-South, unlike the odious View Towers & Jack Davis Building, and avoids a huge north-facing facade.

Yello is not a high rise in my books.

By present day Victoria standards, maybe 15 floors is high, but as we move forward and build 20, 25 and even 30 storey buildings, a 15 floor building, especially in this location, just isn't going to stand out.

I agree that prominent, super wide buildings like the View tower and Jack Davis building have an unappealing visual impact. A 15 floor infill building in the heart of downtown, while wide, will not have nearly the same devastating visual impact. I think this building will turn out looking pretty sharp, given there are some aesthetic niceties with the lack of symmetry, boxes, colour and the slight height variation. Thankfully, this isn't going to be a uniform building, like the Metropolitan, View Tower or Jack Davis building, which are rather monotonous the whole way across their widths. .

I definitely agree that our signature buildings, like Promontory or Hudson Place 1, should stand tall, slim and proud. Our legacy isn't as such, but we appear to be moving in the right direction in that regard.

Chard-Development-celebrates-topping-out-ceremony-for-15-storey-Yello-rental-tower.jpg

With the assistance of a construction crane, workers put the finishing touches on the roof of the 15-storey Yello on Yates rental tower spanning the 800-blocks of Yates and View streets. A 'topping-out' ceremony for the project was held on Wednesday, July 26.

On Wednesday afternoon Chard Development celebrated a topping-out ceremony for the firm’s first purpose-built rental complex in downtown Victoria.

The 209-unit, 15-storey Yello on Yates tower spanning the 800-blocks of Yates and View streets has been underway since last year and is expected to welcome residents to its one and two-bedroom suites by early 2018.

Speaking to a crowd of construction crews, project consultants and local politicians, developer Dave Chard said Yello represents a housing option integral to Victoria’s housing supply.

“For an economy to be healthy, you have to come out with a diverse range of housing types, and hopefully that’s what we’re doing [with Yello],” Chard said, adding that his projects have spanned the housing affordability spectrum and a future condominium residence will be specifically targeting middle income earners. I noticed the other day that the first of the "yellow" at Yello has been installed.
