I'm getting too fat, and my cardio is in an incredibly sorry state - I hate jogging and I'll never sign up at any sort of public gym facility.

I've gotta' do something to improve the above.

So I'm thinking of getting an E-Bike to ride on our extensive trail system - no (or minimal) road riding.

Anybody have any intel on good E-Bike dealers, good bike brands, tips or tricks?

I don't want to spend any more than around $3000.00, after which my brain tells me I'm getting ripped off.

We got our E-bikes at Pedego, good dealer, great bikes.

We ride them mostly on the trails and while they are a lot of fun, I don't think they provide much of a workout and without using the e-assist they are very heavy to pedal around.

I force myself to go to the gym at least 3 days a week, I don't enjoy it but I need to do it. On non gym days, I usually go for a walk.

I built a gym in the basement during covid. Got a number of professional machines really cheap since the gyms were going under when Covid started.

Has anyone drove along the Gorge at rush hour?  I have been looking for bikes.  Not one this past week.  Rush hour.  Not one.

The parallel E&N Trail west of Wilson St averages 745 per day. Off road pathways are popular among cyclists, bike lanes less so.

That’s 373 people.

We might have jumped the shark, again.

The irony in that, of course, is that it’s really great weather for cycling right now. Yah, it’s cold, but in my experience, that’s way more bearable than rain..

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Plan to expand walking, cycling networks in Saanich will cost more, take longer

Council had asked what it would take to accelerate the plan, but a staff report found funding levels are not even sufficient to implement its projects within the next 20 years

I think they should borrow $100,000,000,000 to just do everything now because it will only get more expensive in the future.

Every month, the cost grows by $75,000. Probably.

Yes, make that $1,000,000,000,000,000 otherwise it will only cost more.

And then what'll it cost if-when a future council decides to rip it all out?

I don't foresee any future council ever ripping any major active transportation infrastructure out.

The infrastructure installed to date has cost up into the hundreds of millions of dollars (CRD wide) - and no politician is ever going to score any anti-woke points by ripping any of it out.

I know some folks might like to see it all gone, but they're in a minority - especially in a world where active transportation infrastructure is seen (whether anyone agrees or not) as being quite beneficial to health and good living.

What you will see though, is what Saanich Council just announced - which is that they're delaying, pausing, or otherwise slowing down (and perhaps even stopping) any new bicycle and/or active transportation infrastructure because they simply don't have enough money to maintain the ridiculous pace and outrageous plans as per what they were about to dive into on McKenzie - that is before they were all caught outright lying through their teeth about what they really meant by their proposal(s).

We rode the E&N into town today and went to the China Awakening celebration for a bit. Saw the stumpy little mayor there, otherwise very enjoyable, but no bike valet so we couldn't park our bikes.

On the way home we went up to Government and rode the bike lane to the Gorge, very nice, saw one other bike.

On the Gorge there is not a dedicated bike lane the whole way, where it is double lanes you have to take the lane, and then past Tillicum you have to cross to the other side of the street and use the two way bike lane. Saw two other bikes on this part.

Took Admirals bike lane to OIH bike lane and then rejoined the E&N homeward.

Quite a nice ride, but the lanes could be utilized much more. Maybe as a workday commute they are?

The District of Saanich is building a “bikeway” on Braefoot Road, connecting McKenzie Avenue to Cedar Hill Cross Road.

The plan shows five speed humps (now called “road cushions”), 37 signs on poles and 24 painted road markings, all within 750 metres of roadway.

This is apparently to provide cycles, scooters, skate-boarders and, perhaps soon, golf carts, enhanced opportunity to interact with vehicle traffic on two major thoroughfares.

With the narrow section of Cedar Hill Cross Road between Braefoot and Cedar Hill Road littered with a ridiculous forest of obstacle poles, it is perhaps the most dangerous route in the area for cyclists. This will, of course, require future millions for more “improvements” there.

It’s bike to work week, and Saanich bike lanes are still void of activity. Esquimalt’s too. The roads have been turned into dangerous slaloms with zero margin for error, but hey, politicians are working hard for you.
