Good Samaritan stuck on hold with 911 after woman struck by car in Victoria

VICTORIA - When a woman on bike was struck by a vehicle in front of Budget Brake and Muffler in downtown Victoria on Thursday morning, staff at the shop jumped into action.

"We were quick on scene and called 911," said Ryan Burghardt, owner of Budget Brake and Muffler.

The problem was, nobody answered.

"Eleven minutes on hold to get through to the ambulance," Burghardt told CTV News.

The video clearly shows bike at fault. That said, the hit is pretty sickening…

I don't now, and have never supported the majority of cyclists who flaunt every single traffic law on the books ... but focusing on the cyclists actions prior to the accident completely missies the critically important part of this story, which is about the 11 minute wait for somebody to answer a call to 911.

Inexcusable and unforgivable, and begs the question as to what exactly is going on such that there's an 11 minute wait on a response to a 911 call?

surely there is a way to load-share somehow even with another jurisdiction or two or three.  or another department.   or "press 1 for fire, 2 for police, 3 for ambulance" to get the call moving along.

I think all jurisdictions locally do their 911 business through that new high-security facility out on Commerce Circle in the Vanalman Industrial Park.

Maybe that's the issue? ... a single facility (potentially understaffed) becomes the choke point for all regional 911 calls?

The issue is that nobody was available at the BCEHS dispatch centres to answer the call. Sounds like they got through to 911 fast enough (E-Comm in Saanich) but were stuck on hold with the 911 call taker waiting for the ambulance to answer. The province only has 3 BCEHS dispatch centres (Victoria, Vancouver, Kamloops).

It’s also a job that many people try but few stick with. This has been a mounting problem and now it has bubbled to the surface. Speaking with a dispatcher recently, he told me newcomers often last just a few months and then call it quits due to stress and the fast pace of the job.

Remember, you’re dealing with traumatic situations 24/7, there are no good calls.
