Don't they have to be? Taxi fares are dictated by the passenger transportation board. I don't think they'd have the option of charging higher.

tc says a 15-car Tesla taxi fleet starts in victoria next week.

Same rates as gas powered fleets?

It's Kelowna-based Current Taxi, which markets itself as a luxury taxi service. The fee structure presented on their app is identical to that of the other Kelowna taxis(which is among the highest in the country, I might add...)

Spotted some of their vehicles parked in the Uptown parkade near Best Buy.

Sidney Taxi has suspended operations until further notice because of COVID-19, but one of its three shareholders and directors vows that the business won’t go under.

‘There is no way in hell we are going to let this company we have worked so hard for go under,” said Malcolm Brailsford of Sidney Taxi Wednesday afternoon after the company announced it is immediately suspending operations because the economics are no longer viable. Formed six years ago, the closure impacts 30 staff and six vehicles. Margins are tight for starters and if the business is not there, it does not make sense to keep going, he said.

Brailsford said the company has been trying to operate for the last 10 days with reduced service after business had started to drop off about 14 days ago.

“We are getting no more than two people a shift requiring a taxi and that is usually to the airport,” he said.

The loss of business started around March 7 or 8, starting with various care homes around the area that have contracted the company to transport residents. Because of the virus, they cancelled their calls, said Brailsford.

Seniors, one of the groups most affected by COVID-19 but also perhaps in need of the most support, make up a large share of the company’s customer base. Brailsford said cabs make between 150 and 200 daily pick-ups, more on the weekends.

Normally they use the free charging at Uptown.

Can’t they separate the back of the cabin like a police car? Maybe even separate ventilation?

For Uber put some seatbelts into the back of a pickup truck?

Citing fallout from the pandemic, Kelowna-based Current Taxi is pulling its vehicles from the Victoria market.

In a note to customers, the service, which got approval to start operating in Victoria in the fall of 2019, said it will cease operations on June 28.

When Current hit Victoria in 2019 it promoted itself as the first Canadian, all-electric taxi company.

Victoria’s existing taxi companies were not pleased when Current first applied to the Passenger Transportation Board for its licence. There were nine submissions from competing firms, including Victoria Taxi, Bluebird Taxi and Yellow Cab, arguing there was no public need for additional taxis, especially given the imminent arrival of ride-hailing apps.

^ Not a surprise. I pointed out previously that they seemed to spend most of their time at Uptown charging rather than on the road collecting fares.

it must be difficult.  the fact is that most tourists would never know about a company that only operates here/Kelowna so they'd need to have taxi stand presence.

in the past downtown if you wanted a cab you'd know to find some at the dominion hotel or the strathcona.  not even sure if cabs line up like that anymore.

uber says it is here:

Or down at The Empress, where Empress Taxi would be hanging out. Those were the days.
