The Royal Theatre continues to hold a special place in our collective hearts for Reveen, as he did himself hold a special place in his heart for the Royal Theatre and Victoria.

Reveen continued to come to the Royal until his health prevented him from continuing with any performances, anywhere.

It was a different era back then though, with no internet whatsoever, and shows only advertised their dates on CKDA, CFAX and on the entertainment page of the Times/Colonist.

I can honestly say that I've never seen anybody command a stage the way Reveen commanded the stage night after night.

He was an entertainment powerhouse that Victorians (at least those who were around in the early '70's) fell quite in love with.

I see Reveen is on tour again… or is it one of his kids? Is he even still alive? If only there was some way to find out.

Ty Reveen is one of Peters sons, and the current "Reveen".

Ty was Peters onstage assistant in the later shows at the Royal.

It was a real family affair back in the day, with all of Peters sons, and his wife participating as his onstage assistants.

Unfortunately, Peter Reveen passed away from Alzheimers a few years back.

Surprise, a show that was not Woke actually had an audience come out for it.

Saanich agrees to funding bump for Royal Theatre

With municipal funding unchanged in 25 years despite inflation, the funding “has lost about 40 per cent of its value”

The Capital Regional District board is asking staff to look at scaling up support for three theatres in the region to the tune of $1 million annually.

The CRD has asked staff to develop a new draft service plan and bylaw that would provide more funding to the Royal Theatre and McPherson Theatre in Victoria, and the Charlie White Theatre in Sidney.

Staff were also asked to include flexibility in the new service plan for potential grant funding for a future theatre in the West Shore.

The direction comes after the CRD’s Performing Arts Facilities Select Committee (PAFSC) received a report from consultant Nordicity that found region-wide support for the three theatres would have the most benefit per cost for residents across regional district.

The report recommended that all 13 municipalities in the CRD, but not the three electoral districts, contribute $1,030,000 to the three theatres annually, which breaks down into a median cost of $13.16 per household per year.

“This option includes funding for operating and minor capital expenditures but does not include a major capital reserve for construction of future new facilities,” said the CRD in a release Tuesday.

They polled members of the performing arts and found region wide support for increased spending, amazing.

Now how about we poll members of the general public and see what the response is?

A proposal to share the costs of running the three major civic-funded theatres in Greater Victoria under a new, fairer model is expected to go to an alternate approval process next year.

Directors at the Capital Regional District voted unanimously to move ahead with a regional funding model to contribute to the operating costs of the McPherson Playhouse and Royal Theatre in Victoria and the Charlie White Theatre in Sidney.

“This is a milestone we’ve been working toward for years,” said CRD chair Cliff McNeil-Smith, who is also mayor of Sidney. “Moving forward with this new service brings us closer to expanding the support our local theatres need to thrive.”

A staple in the performing arts scene in Nanaimo has announced it will be permanently closing after 42 years.

The TheatreOne Performance Society voted to dissolve the society, saying the closures required during the height of COVID-19 put its financial situation into survival mode.

“We worked tirelessly to rebuild audiences and increase revenue through grants, donations, fundraising, and sponsorships—with great success—but in the end, it was too little, too late,” Michael Cade, the artistic and managing director of TheatreOne, said in a statement on its website.

Curtain rises on new CRD arts facilities service

The service will provide operating and capital funding to the Charlie White Theatre in Sidney, and the Royal Theatre and McPherson Playhouse in Victoria.

The maximum amount that can be requisitioned annually for the service is $3 million.

The City of Victoria has been unhappy with the funding arrangement for regional theatres for years.

The city has been the lone municipal source of funding for the McPherson, providing $750,000 annually toward the operational budget of the theatre.

The Royal Theatre, by comparison, is funded by Victoria, Saanich and Oak Bay.
