Ah. Good.

^^I am sure that was what was said when they covered up the buiding that houses the Monaco Lofts (Beldar Bldg?) Anyways I am just wondering is there some detail here that we are not noticing that our children will wonder what we were thinking in covering up the building in the first place.

I mean I am all for fixing that building up but just thought I would pose the question.

I see your point, but look at it. It's a confused mishmash of materials thrown together with very little weight put into esthetics.
I doubt with facade will be pined for thrity years from now.

Are you suggesting there's a redeeming original design under there? If so, it would seem to be lost forever.

The simple solution to this one is to demolish it and start over again. I'm no fan, as you can tell.

how come as our city has become larger, our downtown's buildings have been replaced by smaller less quality buildings, and how come city hall views this as the norm and a good thing?

No I believe that this is the original design. We are commenting on its currently in progress makeover to an all aluminium cladding. Will this some day be lamented. Also Icebergalley wants to know who the original architect was, but I have not found out.

It may sound laughable to some, but history proves the embarrassing eyesore of yesterday often becomes beloved heritage fifty years later.

No doubt. When we're all 90 years old I'm sure we'll be vigorously defending the first phase of the Songhees as essential Victorian heritage.

Aastra's recent Blanshard St view...

The Royal is having a good smoke...

And the iconic globular street lights are there too..

I've been curious as to why they did not seem to be spec'd by the City for Humboldt Street, Penwell Fairfield, Blanshard.... Especiallly as the Downtown Business Assoc seem to have bought more of them to add to the Downtown...

The Concert Properties developments have added different scaled and type - unique to the project?

Wonder if The Aria will have their on on their side of the street?

It is too bad that they don't continue to use the lights everywhere. I did watch a Shaw TV blip on the lights once apparently Victoria does own the mold for the lights so more can be made. Also why do they have them in Saanich along Douglas Street as far North as the Red Lion.

You know what else is interesting about that pic. It shows a third location of the YMCA. This was probably the first then the Cap 6 location then the Broughton Street location. And it is time they moved again or at least did a full remodel.

Also kind of strange that they tore that building down to put up the collection of one and two storey crap shacks that are there now. Man people are weird. That building would look great there now instead we get pink shingles.

DVBA has actually commissioned more of these globe style lights...

[/quote]Cluster Lights
In the fall of 2005, the Downtown Victoria Business Association committed $27,138 to assist with the cost of fabricating and installing 55 new heritage cluster lights within the Downtown. This initiative, led and also funded by the City, has received Federal funding and a commitment is presently being awaited from another funding source.

That building on the left is where the library/Waddington complex is now, no? The crapshacks are on the next block and they're in the pic (if my eyes don't deceive me).

That building in the distance on the right...is that the YMCA at View or is it something else on the corner of Fort? It looks like it's nearer to the camera than the Montrose across the street.

"new heritage cluster lights" That is funny. I think I am going to build an antique Ming Vase and make millions too!

I just noticed that Bastion Square does not have these lamps but some sort of fake gaslight instead.
