“It’s about time,” said Mayor Marianne Alto. “I do strongly believe that had a previous council, in which I was part, in the majority had a little more courage, we would all be swimming in a pool by now.”

Don’t say it, Mike. Don’t say it…

Instead we are going to be swimming in red ink.

Neighbouring facilities bracing for impact of extended Crystal Pool closure

Both Saanich and Oak Bay are anticipating a crush of demand for pool space from swimmers who will be without a pool for a few years while the Crystal Pool replacement is being built

Somebody should just build an outdoor pool somewhere, like in an existing park.   Better cities have them.

I would definitely use an outdoor pool. I remember in the 1960s going on driving holidays with my parents to the interior. Every darn small town we passed through had an outdoor pool. I was very envious.

I grew up using outdoor pools in Ontario and lots of swimming in lakes.

Crush of demand? Didn't you tell us there were very few, relatively, regular users of the existing pool.

I did, and I stand by that.

The way to deal with this, of course, is to raise your rates at peak times and discount off-peak, as well as expanding hours slightly.

Oak Bay is only open 6am to 10pm.   Move that to 4am to 1am.

Gordon Head is generally 6am-10pm.

Of course, one can build a pool in just one week.

Considering that we are on the verge of an economic crisis is this really the time for this vanity project.

Preliminary results are in following Saturday’s referendum in the Oceanside area.

Voters in the City of Parksville, Town of Qualicum Beach and Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Electoral Areas (EA) E, F, G and H were asked to vote on whether the RDN could borrow up to $30 million to expand Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.

Early results released by the RDN indicated 2,877 people voted “yes,” while 4,487 said “no” to borrowing the funds to expand the centre.

The RAC was built in 1995, and with 94,000 visits a year, the Regional District of Nanaimo says it needs to be expanded.

It wanted to borrow upwards of $30 million to cover most of the cost, but the RDN will now have to decide what steps to take next.

A $7 million federal grant will now likely be lost.

With Crystal Pool slated for a complete re-do, and the news of another downtown pool closing, the Capital city is looking at the reality of being pool-less in the near future.

“It’s going to be challenging,” said Victoria Councillor Jeremy Caradonna. “It’s going to be a tough few years.”

The YMCA recently announced it’s moving in 2026 to the pool-less location of The Bay Centre.

“We’re down three pools in a city that was already over capacity,” said Karmen McNamara, a Crystal pool advocate.

Today I saw this report on the European news. In Belgium they're using mobile swimming pools for children's swim lessons. Victoria could use a few of these. It's inside a structure that looks like a small tennis bubble. I don't think the pool shown in this article it one of them however.

The current situation harms the homeless and addicted themselves. It harms downtown and our neighbourhoods. It harms civic society. This is anarchy and social violence. Why does common sense vanish around an issue like this?

Oh, right. We really need a new $200-million pool — clearly the city’s and the citizens’ highest priority, while downtown collapses.

Provincial assistance is critical? Then how about the mayor and the entire council stand on the legislature lawn with placards, every day, all day long, until the province can’t take it and forks over the necessary resources.

Street life is a horrific and consequential social problem. Sorry, but if you hear “marginalized,” run the other way. It’s code for inertia.

I hate to be that guy, but I bet a box of donuts on this: if the governments (everywhere, not just in BC) finally do something pro-active after all these decades, the measures will be drafted in such a way that the "slippery slope" implications will be glaring.

If the current status of the pool has it starting design work in Q3 of 2025, and it is expected to take 2.0 years, then construction will take 3.5 to 4.0 years, would that not equal to a 2031 opening window?
