I'm putting my foot down on this.

Whoa, calm down. Take it easy. We're listening, we understand your concerns. You know what? You win. You're a tough customer.

Who says that kind of engagement can't produce successful outcomes?

The federal government has announced new tools to help people manage chronic pain in an effort to stem the rate of deaths due to illicit toxic drugs in British Columbia.

The announcement comes the same day the B.C. Coroners Service released its monthly overdose death report, which found at least 171 people died from toxic drugs in B.C. in September.

That means at least 1,644 people have died so far this year — putting the province on track to surpass 2,000 annual deaths for the second year in a row.

Men continue to account for the vast majority of people dying due to poisoned drugs in B.C., at 80 per cent, Monday's coroner's report said. More than 70 per cent of people who died were between 30 and 59 years old.

Sounds like prescribed or so-called "safe" opioids, which IIRC, have been deemed a significant cause of the current "crisis". Have we really learned nothing?

As of June, B.C. had 3,272 publicly-funded addiction treatment beds for both youth and adults with 648 of them in Island Health. This is the first bed-based, addiction treatment operated by Island Health on Vancouver Island that focuses on women.

The solution might be just around the corner:

Heroin program likely solution

A government-sponsored heroin maintenance program is the likely solution to B.C.'s growing drug problem, according to David Vickers, deputy attorney-general.

"It is the solution we will likely have to end up with but not without a good shot at treatment programs,"

Vickers said the methadone treatment for heroin addicts was not used extensively in B.C. and the principal focus was in setting up detoxification centres, where people are treated on an individual basis.

He said there were essentially two choices -- either a forced medical model or a heroin maintenance program.

Vickers noted 65 per cent of the heroin problem in Canada was on the West Coast, but added the solution was a national one.

"I feel the problem can't be solved in terms of B.C. alone... it's a national or international issue."

"What we have to do really is take the profit out of the drug scene."

Do many people receiving methadone "treatment" actually lead functioning, productive lives, or have they just traded a life addicted to heroin for a life entirely dependent on methadone?

..Methadone substitution as a treatment of opioid addiction has been criticized in the social sciences for its role in the social control of addicts...methadone, which mimics the effects of opioids and renders the addict compliant, is labeled as a "treatment"...It is suggested that methadone does not function as much to curb addiction as to redirect it and maintain dependency on authorised channels...

A major announcement is expected Sunday on public safety. Mayors from across B.C. have pleaded for help dealing with rampant street crime and random stranger attacks. But Eby’s first move looks to be concentrated on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where the crisis is most acute.

Eby described what’s coming as a co-ordinated approach by every agency in and outside of government to tackle mental health, homeless and addiction crises.

The legislature, which adjourned for an extra week to give Eby time to take over, is scheduled to sit for four more days next week. It has a number of bills in process, but Eby plans to introduce major housing legislation as well.

It includes at least two pieces of legislation that will involve “opening up housing that should be available right now for rent, but isn’t, and making sure that we’re delivering that housing supply that we need.”

“It’s a remarkable thing, that by passing law, we can open up new rental housing for people. We’re going to do that.”

In Phoenix they seem to have realized "housing first" is not actually the answer...

...Phoenix is so wrapped in the dogma that pushes the failed policy of “housing first” and appeasement rather than treatment that it leaves the victims with neither justice nor respect. It leaves the homeless abandoned to the vicious cycle of desperation and misery...

Sound familiar?

Probably just a coincidence. There are hundreds of other cities in the exact same situation, so it's not even a very unusual coincidence.

I've been pointing out the disconnect between government policy on nicotine vs opioid addiction for years. Glad to know I'm not the only who sees this.

‘People are still dying’: Changes coming after another suspected overdose death in supportive housing

“I’ve been in this building for a year and a half, this is the sixth deceased person I’ve seen them take out,” she said. “This is coming from a pandemic where a building has been set aside as a ‘wet building’ for lack of better words, but people are still dying.”

If not for such "disconnects" there wouldn't be any government policies at all.
