The developer confirms this is a temporary closure for soil testing. The spots will be made available again in about two weeks.
Unless they plan on repaving a large section, quite a number of parking spaces could be lost based on the size of the current excavation. I suppose these might be covered in gravel until the project gets officially underway. Has a development permit been issued? I can't seem to find this project on the Development Tracker website.
I also noticed as I walked past today, that the planters dividing the property next door are being completely stripped of their soil. IIRC, several sections of the planter will be removed as part of the YonY development.
Edit: According to the May 11, 2017, CoV Council Meeting Minutes, the DP was approved.

It will take me a long time to get over what is certain to be the loss of the Ryan Adams releasing a jellyfish mural.

A Chard sales agent told me this afternoon there might be 1 or even 2 1brs left now, a couple sales did not proceed.
Just Yates St. is selling now, Johnson has not begun sale yet.

Has it been confirmed whether the Johnson Street building will be condos or market rentals?

It's all condos. One strata plan for the whole works.

Perhaps the sales success of the Yates building will encourage Chard to move up the marketing for the other tower (Johnson on Johnson)?
According to the Citified entry, construction will start this year, so the surface lot will soon be *permanently* on its way out...

Is that who the mural is of, and not the local musician who passed away last year (or maybe 2015, even)?

I have no idea, really. I doubt it's supposed to be Ryan.

It's of Daniel Kingsbury. Musician (was in a local band called Mindil Beach Markets (or Mindil Beach)), was a founder of an environmental education non-profit, The Jellyfish Project. He died in June 2015

That's it!
I spoke with the fellas who were putting up the mural. They knew it would (fairly soon) get covered up.
One interesting tidbit is the amount of paint budgeted by the financier of the mural wasn't enough to cover the entire space of the mural, so the artists opted to create the vertical stripes on either side of Kingsbury.
Know it all.

Booooo, because that means they aren't planning on starting excavation for at least a few months (I guess).
