Coastal Rides expands rideshare service to Port Alberni
Coastal Rides founder Ryan Staley, who has an academic background in transportation planning, said he started the company because of gaps in the transportation system he experienced while living in Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast.

Uber Technologies Inc. says it’s recruiting drivers “from Nanaimo to Fort St. John and everywhere in between” as it plans an expansion outside B.C.’s major centre starting next year.
The ride-hailing service is currently only available in Victoria, Metro Vancouver and Kelowna, but received approval from the B.C. Passenger Transportation Board in May 2023 to operate across B.C.

Online sellers and gig workers have changes coming for the upcoming tax season, as digital platforms are now required to report income generated to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
Platform operators — like Etsy, DoorDash, Uber or Airbnb — are now required to report the income of people in Canada earning revenue on their platforms. This requirement came into effect at the start of 2024, meaning income earned on digital platforms will be reported to the CRA for the upcoming tax year.
[...]
As this is the first year of the reporting requirement, the CRA says it will waive late filing penalties up to July 31, 2025.
Sellers will also receive the information reported to the CRA by Jan. 31 each year.
Sellers will be required to report their name, primary address, tax identification number, date of birth (for an individual), business registration number (for an entity), financial account numbers, the name of the holder of the financial account, total paid or credited to the seller for the calendar year, and any fees or taxes withheld or charged by the platform operator.

I’ve had some difficulty getting early morning Ubers sometimes and have to call for a cab. But it’s getting better and during normal hours I find it just as good as taxis, if not better. You can see exactly where the uber is before it arrives and track it.
The last time I took a taxi, I was heading to Helijet. It was about 6:20 in the morning and there weren’t many Ubers on the road. I live downtown and I walked a block to the nearest hotel and grabbed one of the taxis that was waiting outside. The driver looked pissed, probably because he wanted an airport or ferry run. Drove like a maniac to the Helijet, never started the meter, then asked for $20 once I got to the Helijet.

I’ve had that happen too, the driver gets upset and runs without a meter.
Thanks for that. I just don’t see many Ubers out there like I see in other cities.

You don't run the meter, you don't get paid, is what I'd say...

I have been in several countries where cab drivers refused to drive me because the distance was small.
As a visitor you do not have the time or energy etc. to complain or report even if it is not allowed to refuse you.

I have used Uber back and forth to the airport, very good service. In LAS I used Uber to go about 10 blocks and there was no complaint.

If more than 45 per cent sign, the B.C. Labour Relations Board will order a vote on unionization.
Johnson said more than 500 drivers signed union cards before UFCW applied for certification on March 10.

Whoever would have guessed there were 600 local drivers.

I have never had a complaint with uber. .
I’ve had a couple drivers with excessive acceleration and hard braking. Enough to make me feel a bit car sick. I mean, come on.

Julia called 911, and police arrived within a few minutes. An officer called Uber to get contact information for the driver but Julia says a representative for the ride-sharing company refused to provide it — stating the police needed to fill out a form.
[…]
Julia says it took about an hour and a half for police to find her five-year-old. Officers then drove Julia to her daughter who was "unharmed but in hysterics." Police found the girl and the driver about 20 kilometres away from her boyfriend's house in the city's north end.
[…]
Julia's boyfriend later received a $10 credit from Uber, which she considers "a massive slap in the face."

I laughed quite aloud when I read the $10 part.

My partner left her phone in an Uber last year and we had no trouble contacting the driver to get it back. Something sounds a little off here.
