I heard Lund's Auction on Fort had their big front window smashed on Monday and some stuff was taken. I don't know what was stolen but I do know there was an amazing and expensive Bill Reid sculpture in the window that was supposed to be auctioned Tuesday evening.

^The statue is still there but the TC says one-of-a-kind hand-carved Bill Reid earrings worth around $10,000 were stolen.

Also, a friend tells me the new Winners in the Bay Centre has lost $300,000 worth of goods to shoplifters.

Last night security at Uptown were threatened with a knife. No weapon was produced but the perp said he had one. He then fled to a taxi and was driven off but police were quick to apprehend the man.

It’s scary out there.

Meanwhile outside of the Pemberton Holmes insurance office on Tolmie an idling vehicle with a man “sleeping” inside was called in. The plate came back stolen. The man inside was likely high and dozed off, the theory went. The police response was intense, with a squadron of vehicles dispatched and a bean bag shotgun on hand.

Know it all.

I think it could be fair to say that crime in the Greater Victoria area is increasing (or at least it appears to be)

I think it could be fair to say that the increase in crime can be linked to the increase in the drug trade.

The increase in the drug trade can be linked to the increase in the number of drug users.

The increase in drug users can be linked to the increase in transient and home grown persons who also have no visible means of support. (read income from gainful employment)

The increase of persons with no visible means of support can be linked to the decrease in law enforcement (there are other jurisdictions in this country that uphold the law which as a result are not conducive to a less than exemplary lifestyle, so these persons gravitate to an area that overlooks these indescretions)..... as well as the increase in social services and attitudes that enable the lifestyle of the drug users.

The decrease in law enforcement and the increase of social services can be linked to the increase of progressive left leaning idealists (read identity socialists) that champion the freedoms and rights of persons with no visible means of support.

Again...a socialist is someone who has nothing and wants to share it with everyone, and a law without a penalty is only a suggestion.

Until there is a political shift to uphold the foundation of law and order and penalize those who disregard our laws and bylaws (no matter how insignificant they might seem) ....crime will increase. (too simple right?)

We cannot continue with the adage that "people don't usually steal without a reason" in order to justify the decrease in law enforcement...because for the most part the increase in crime is because the reason is that the people that steal do not have a visible means of support.... and it takes cash in order to buy drugs. (a never ending loop)

Economics 101. One's income must be equal to or greater than one's expenses.

Free soup and socks won't change that, and the socialist ideal that "community" based policing is more effective than "enforcement" based policing is in my opinion...hogwash.

I remember when the speed limit changes was a hot topic.  Council and supporters all claimed that even if the limits didn't change actual behavior, it was the 'perception of safety' that would see more pedestrians and cyclists taking back the streets.

You can't go a day hour without reading about someone's bike being stolen.  Someone's car being smashed into.  Someone being attacked because they didn't give a panhandler a few dollars.  It seems like VicPD and the ERT have hauled their shiny matte black Terradyne Gurkha out of the basement more times than they can count in recent months.  Barricading ones self into their home after kicking a stolen puppy to death is not a symptom of a healthy community.  Smashing into businesses and causing havoc in a residential building is not a sign of a stable community.

So, why aren't we attacking the perception of crime and safety with the same ferocious tenacity we attacked the perception of vehicle speeds?

Very well said. And of course, Ben, Jeremy and assorted visibly insane academics/activists who hate the cops and want to downsize them, because the cops are not letting those pure-hearted and noble criminals do enough crimes.

I'm curious, Ben and Ben's Sock Puppet, when you say there are too many cops, clearly you feel like not enough crimes are being committed currently; so what are you hoping to see? More sexual assaults, maybe? More youth getting hooked on crack? More murders, perhaps that's what you're hoping will happen? Maybe more elderly people being assaulted? After all, most of them are homeowners, possibly veterans, so that would play right into several of your psychological issues at once.

I get that, as long as it doesn't happen to you, it's all good. We get your deep rooted, childish contempt for most of your constituents, but I am genuinely curious about the details of your no-cop/bad-cop fantasies.

I think Ben's theory is that if the cops stopped putting the heat on street folk for sitting around it would free up resources to focus on real crime. Homeless problems would be helped by the ACT/Vicot and other support staff.

That's the idea anyway. In reality, these support workers often require police backup.

City bylaw officers are pretty good about clearing sidewalks of junk. They're not supposed to clean up private property but they have been known to do it if asked.

rightly so they don't go without police backup.  police have the training in case things go sideways.

"Sheri Ziaee, believed to be the mother of the two 19-year-old brothers, continues to maintain an active presence on social media under a new name.

According to screenshots shared across online groups in southern Vancouver Island, Ziaee is currently using a Facebook profile with the name ‘Nadi San’ to conduct transactions through Marketplace."

Saanich man serving life for double murder granted appeal for day parole

Derik Christopher Lord was convicted in 1992 for two second-degree murders

I sincerely doubt Lord is some shyster trying to game the system. With the "help" of his parents he's brainwashed himself so completely that he truly does not believe he murdered those women. Or he's so muddled he doesn't know what really happened. It's diabolical.

he's been eligible for parole since 2002.  he's been eligible for parole for most of his incarceration now.  he has no crime on his record other than the double-murder committed when he was 17 years old.  very unique case i'd say.

i'd even bet he's been kept in jail longer than any other 17-year-old contemporary murderer with no other offences.
