Technology and teamwork led to another successful arrest for @ICS_K9 PSD Bruno!

On October 13, just before 7:45pm, officers responded to a robbery in the 2800-block of Douglas Street. A male suspect allegedly pointed bear mace at the victim and then stole cash along with the victim's iPhone.

Using Apple's iPhone tracking capabilities, officers located the suspect in the 700-block of Topaz Avenue. All it took was a bark from Bruno to get the suspect to surrender. The suspect was arrested without incident and held in custody for court.

Cash and the iPhone were recovered thanks to the quick thinking of investigators and assistance from PSD Bruno. Now that's a good boy!

Victoria Police says two youths were arrested on Sunday for firing airsoft pistols at a school playground.

Officers were called to the playground at Central Middle School for a report of “the sound of rapid gunfire, possibly from an airsoft pistol” around 8:30 p.m.

Witnesses tell CHEK News that a large police response could be seen at the playground on Sunday evening.

VicPD says two youth were arrested at the scene, and that two airsoft pistols were located.

“The youth were released into the care of their parents and the file remains under investigation,” said police in a statement Tuesday.

Woman reports indecent exposure on Cedar trail

The incident occurred about 1 p.m. on the Cable Bay Trail located off Holden Corso Road in Cedar

A woman walking on a trail in Cedar ran into a man committing an indecent act on Tuesday, backed away and called police, Nanaimo RCMP said.

The incident occurred about 1 p.m. on the Cable Bay Trail located off Holden Corso Road in Cedar.

Police said the 49-year-old woman was walking toward Dodds Narrows when she saw a man crouched in nearby bushes with his pants down.

She said he quickly stood up and she could see that he was committing an indecent act, so she backed away and walked as fast as she could back to her car, where she called police.

Officers conducted patrols but no one was found.

The suspect is described as Hispanic, in his 40s, heavy-set and clean-shaven, with long, dark hair with some grey on the sides and tied in a ponytail.

He was wearing a long-sleeved, faded, plaid button-up shirt and blue jeans, and had about a four-centimetre red scar, possibly a birth mark, on the front of his right thigh.

She was walking her Pit Bull, you would have thought the creep might have thought twice about victimizing her.

Noise-flash device used in arrest in Esquimalt

A noise-flash diversionary device was used in the arrest of a woman in Esquimalt on Tuesday evening.

Victoria police said officers, with assistance from the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team, made the arrest in the area of Esquimalt Road and Joffre Street.

Witnesses described on social media seeing a “smoke bomb” and officers with automatic rifles pointed at a parked car as the driver slowly opened the door. A police dog was also said to be on the scene.

Youth on the nearby No. 26 bus were described as crouching on the ground amid the explosive noise and takedown. A grey compact car at the scene was later towed away.

Man who took deposits for sheds, boxes that he never delivered ordered to repay victims

A man convicted of 16 counts of fraud under $5,000 for taking deposits on cedar sheds and planter boxes that he failed to deliver has been given a six-month conditional sentence and two years’ probation, and ordered to repay his victims.

Saanich police said that Bruce William Wood operated under the name C.B. Contracting and Labour and advertised on Facebook Marketplace from March to June 2021.

“His victims connected with him through the platform, contracted his services and paid deposits,” police said in a statement. “However Mr. Woods never completed the work, consistently provided excuses as to why he couldn’t and failed to return the deposits.”

Hesquiaht First Nation and family call for justice in Island murder

October 17, 2024

Screenshot 2024-10-18 00.43.25.png
Patrick Charleson IV, known as Heman, has been identified as the victim of a murder on Vancouver Island by family members.

The Hesquiaht First Nation and family of the man shot and killed on Dididaht First Nation territory last month has identified 24-year-old Patrick Charleson IV, known as Heman, as the victim and are calling for justice.

“He was fun, caring, like my boy said, protector. He was always protecting his siblings, every one of them,” said Patrick Charleson III, Heman’s father.

It was 7 a.m. on Sept. 28 when police were called to a home in the Nitinaht community of the Dididaht First Nation and found Heman’s body. He’d been shot. Later that day police arrested 24-year-old Derian Tate and he was charged with first-degree murder soon after.

Heman grew up and lived in Hot Springs Cove, an hour boat ride from Tofino, but he was in the Nitinaht community visiting friends and family when he was shot.

His Hesquiaht First Nation and family say their call for justice would see the accused prosecuted as he is currently charged, for first-degree murder.

“We know how the courts work in Canada,” said Mariah. “We know there are often plea deals. We know there are ways to shorten the sentences. The family is willing to sit through a trial if it means that the accused spends life behind bars.”

They also say they believe a second person was involved in Heman’s killing and they hope that that person will also face charges.

The family also wants the public to know Heman was special, a hunter and fisher, and the loss of his life is immense.

The accused remains in custody and has been ordered to consult a lawyer before his next court appearance on Nov. 12. None of the charges have been proven in court.

Driver wanted to ‘demean and degrade’ pro-Palestinian protestors, not hit them with his car

October 17, 2024

Screenshot 2024-10-18 00.53.55.png
CHEK News

The 40-year-old carpenter accused of driving at a pro-Palestinian protester last December, testified in his own trial in Victoria on Thursday.

Christopher Sura Johnson is facing charges of dangerous driving and assault with a weapon from December 3, 2023. He is pleading not guilty.

Johnson admitted that he was angry that day for several reasons, but didn’t intentionally drive his car towards a pedestrian.

“I was unhinged because I just thought ‘what’s the worst that can happen? Mom is leaving, you know this Venezuelan girl is probably just a pile of crap like the last one,'” said Johnson in court on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024.

Johnson maintains he didn’t see the pedestrian that had to jump out of his car’s way as he swerved off Menzies Street onto a driveway on the west side of the legislature.

He says his focus is on a pro-Palestinian protestor he was arguing with from his car moments before while he was driving along Menzies Street.

“I started lipping off…I said ‘are you on drugs? Do you know what’s really going on?’” said Johnson.

He also testified that he was angry because of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israeli festival goers and mentioned unprompted, frustration around not being allowed into the military.

“Was I angry? I’ve been angry since I was 6-years-old,” said Johnson.

“I just wanted them to know it’s a load of crap because Palestine is not a real place,” said Johnson.

“I was proud of the fact that I was helping them have some empathy for the Jews who they were taught to hate since they were babies,” retorted Johnson.

Johnson’s lawyer Peter Firestone said his client’s driving was ‘nothing more than mere negligence’.

The trial is expected to conclude tomorrow.
