That press release does not seem all that useful. What steps should the public take?

I'm told the police were quite helpful towards my property manager, so I would advise contacting them if you were affected.

Uh, the master key just gets you in the front door, not the door to the residences, they have axes for that.
Maybe in your building where they use skeleton keys it's different.

Rental buildings have Master master keys just so you know. They get you in the front door and into all suites. I used to be an assistant building manager. Covered the weekends that fell on a Sat. Sun and stats.

Don't all weekends fall on Sat/Sun?

I suppose if you work on a Sat or Sun your weekend could be Tues or Wed. If you are retired every day is the same.

Article in the TC this morning, but something seems odd in that the police are very vague, and the fire department really aren't saying anything.

This "key box" may be standard operating procedure around the world (according to the TC), but one presumes that the boxes are either secure enough that they can't be broken into, or the fire department can maintain the security of their master key.

Honestly, it's one of the above, there are no other options ... and either one makes the fire department look like they're far from in control of the security of their access boxes and the private keys inside of those boxes.

Slight odour of some sort of cover-up here ... and I seriously doubt that we're hearing (or will hear) the entire story?

I think that perhaps once a determined criminal chips one of those out of a concrete wall and takes it home, he might be able to reverse engineer a master key

The 2012 key theft may possibly have been an inside job, as the fire chief suggested. I don't recall if that was ever confirmed or if any suspect was identified or charged.

But after that issue, they started installing the barrel type, no?  Rather than the surface-mounted boxes.

Oak Bay police are investigating after a customer at an Oak Bay business was seen with what appeared to be a handgun.

Police said the man entered the business near Oak Bay Municipal Hall about 7:15 p.m. Monday with the possible handgun visible inside a clear plastic bag, which he was holding casually.

He bought some items and left, and at no time were an threatening gestures made.

Police sent a dog and forensics officers immediately. There have been no other such incidents reported in the municipality and police are checking with other jurisdictions for similar occurrences.

Why didn't the business employees say "hey, mate, what's with that thing that looks like a gun in your plastic bag?"

Was it a real plastic bag or a bio-degradable bag.

There are probably lots of cases never reported of " Is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me"

looks like our building (north park area) was one of the ones effected by the master key keybox issue, i only know because there was a Vic fire department business card shoved into the hole that once held the keybox, no one in our building has been contacted by Vic PD that i know of (and considering my husband is the building manager/caretaker i'm pretty sure if they contact anyone it would be him) and if it wasn't for me being semi up to date on local news and letting him know what i've read (mostly through here) he wouldn't have even known about it

I believe they've removed all of them in the city,   every apartment/condo/commercial building in the CoV.

The real crime was the plastic bag.

The other day outside the Market on Yates there was a group of folks soliciting signatures for a petition to ban plastic shopping bags. Needless to say, I didn't stop to sign it. I almost wished I hadn't had my re-usable bag with me.

Victoria police say 911 is a critical lifeline for many people, but one particular caller has been abusing the system.

According to officials, a caller has dialed the three numbers 375 times in a 48-hour time span.

VicPD says the calls are coming from a stolen iPhone 5 in the Sitkum Road area.

Anyone with information is asked to call Victoria police or Crime Stoppers.

375 times?  That's almost 4 times more than the number of dick pix Elsner sent off on twitter in a 72-hour period.

Bring in the Stingray from Vancouver and nab this guy.
