None of the nearly dozen of online articles today mention the other guy. Or at least his status. Where is he at?

Good. A life sentence should be a life sentence.

Good. A life sentence should be a life sentence.

You want a 16-year-old to stay in prison to 70 or 80 years old? To what end does that serve him, us, the victim’s family?

He’s 28 now, 12 years later. Do you think his mood or emotions or actions as described at the parole hearings are those of a normal person not brought up in prison?  Or are the direct result of being in prison?

I’m not OK with children being put away for life. Monitored very closely for a long time, on the outside, maybe. But not in prison for life.

Prevents them from re-offending.

Possibly yes. 10 years is not a significant time to the victim's family. I don't really argue that young convicts should have a chance at parole; thankfully our parole board system seems to be strong enough to resist the 'let everyone go' mentality in Canada lately. Young killers though, need a longer minimum sentence before any parole hearings.

Re. the other fella, he apparently hasn't applied for parole. hence, no news.

What percentage of child killers (at 16) re-offend? Kill again. I’d guess it’s likely zero.

You’ve got the Rena Virk case, where the female offender is still in the news, making mistakes. While the older male killer has been on parole 15 years longer, and has fixed his life.

Same with Darren Hueneman murder. Those incarcerated longest are the most problems.

Life in prison is more lenient than the eye-for-an-eye punishment he probably deserves after such an horrendous crime.

South Island inmates carving totem pole ‘a step in taking the right path’

At the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre (VIRCC), a 340-year-old cedar log is being carved into a totem pole by inmates as a form of healing.

“They have protocols they have to follow inside, but when they’re out here, they’re on a first name basis to make them feel equal again,” said Tom LaFortune, the artist hosting the program.

The project offers between 60-80 incarcerated participants on good behaviour from across the Island, a sense of freedom not otherwise offered between the cement walls and metal beds within the prisons where they live.

“It’s sort of equalized that power dynamic and there’s far more comfort back here,” said VIRCC Warden, Richard Singleton.

Prior to 2022, VIRCC was without any sort of land acknowledgment or tie to the people and past the building upon. When Max Henry was hired as the Indigenous Cultural Liaison at VIRCC, he set out to change that.

“It’s a stamp that’s going to be there forever and I can drive past it, and show people about it – that I carved an owl and it’s watching over,” said Brandon Castle, an inmate at VIRCC.

“Tom [LaFortune] has offered for me, when I get out of here, to come carve with him at his shop. That’s an opportunity I wouldn’t have had without a program like this,” said Roger Derr.

A three-year prison sentence for a man who drove a stolen car into a defenceless police officer outside Our Place last year serves notice that assaults on officers will not be tolerated, the injured officer said Wednesday.

“This incident happened at a time when there was a big trend of assaults and violence on police,” said Victoria police Const. Todd Mason, a 12-year veteran. “That needs to end. We need to protect the police because if we’re not around, who is going to protect the public. So I hope the sentence sends a message that police are not targets.”

Mason made the comments after Chance Nichol, a 28-year-old homeless man with a long-standing heroin addiction, was escorted out of the courtroom to begin serving his sentence.

Nichol had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and assaulting a police officer with a weapon on Sept. 27, 2021. He had also pleaded guilty to mischief for smashing the windows of two downtown businesses.

Police officers, including Deputy Chief Jason Laidman, came to court in a show of support for Mason, who said he is happy the court process is over and he can start focusing on his physical recovery and mental health.

Mason suffered a “gross deformity to his right shoulder,” diagnosed as a “grade 4 separation.” He is expected to have surgery in a few weeks.

Three years. Minus how much time served?

This was attempted murder, nearly vehicular homicide.

Did you even read the article?

He's still considered a complete psychopath in 2022, found by his doctors as very likely to murder again, with a high likelihood of committing something as similarly horrendous as what he did to the Proctor girl.

Who cares if he was brought up in prison? ... he tortured, murdered, dismembered, and burned an innocent young girl ... get your head on straight man.

Corrections document shows why a violent prison escapee was transferred to minimum-security William Head

A warden overrode Zachary Armitage’s risk classification to allow his transfer to William Head from a medium-security prison, according to a restricted internal report. Now he’s on trial for a murder allegedly committed during his escape.

Screenshot 2022-08-18 13.25.41.png

The 2019 escape of two inmates from William Head Institution has resulted in a lawsuit against the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). How those inmates ended up in a prison with the lowest security level has been an outstanding question.

An internal CSC report—the contents of which have not been made public before now—details the thinking behind a security classification override given to Zachary Armitage, a prisoner with a history of violent crimes and four previous escapes. The override lowered Armitage’s assigned security level, allowing him to be transferred from Mission Institution, a medium-security prison in the Fraser Valley, to William Head, the minimum-security prison from which he later escaped.

Armitage arrived there in early 2018. At some point he befriended James Lee Busch. Like Armitage, Busch had a violent past and had received a security classification override from the Mission Institution warden.

As Capital Daily previously reported, William Head correctional officers were warned in the summer of 2019 that Busch was a “ticking time bomb.” Some began to think he wasn’t an appropriate fit for the institution. A correctional manager wrote to colleagues that Busch might need to be relocated to a higher security environment.

But that never happened.

It’s a bit strange to think a guy with multiple escape attempts would be housed here.
