One of the grocery wholesalers we use for ice cream just picked up another product line by “Neale’s Sweet and Nice” so of course I ordered a case. You see, I have a problem where I like to order things I personally think I might enjoy. It’s really a poor way to handle purchasing, but I am weak.

Opened the guava passion fruit today, and it’s not too bad! I remembered that I don’t particularly love either of those fruits, so will try the rum raisin next time.

This company also distributes Ben and Jerry’s, so it’ll be easy to find in any grocery store in the next week or two. Yes, they also distribute the Keg ice cream products, including a new “creme brûlée” one.

There was a cooler full of flavours and they were all made the same way. I’ll double check next time I’m at this market and report back.

Coconut ice cream is off-colour, when you’re expecting the real thing, for $10/bar.

It’s all to do with the dairy act.

I looked into it when cold comfort got the shaft, as did one of our local makers. The local guy had an existing popsicle business, and started doing some ice cream bars as well and of course he got in trouble for it. We sold them at the shop, great product.

Up until 2019 you needed a dairy plant license to make ice cream, or any dairy product, for sale. There was an exception in 2019 that allowed for food service operators to make and sell on site, only on site, to help promote local, small production.

I dunno, maybe this license isn’t that hard to get, or maybe it’s just another layer of government intervention nobody needs, or maybe there is a public safety risk I don’t fully understand.

Edited to say this doesn’t really sit well with me, because I was sure making ice cream at work well prior to 2019, and we were never once asked about any dairy license. I guess they only go after big fish.

I'm assuming y'all got the vague in/vegan thing in my post #39 above.

Anyway, I'm just saying I'm pretty sure I've bought actual Parachute ice cream (not the vegan flavours) from grocery stores around town. If this is going to be contentious then I can go out right now and buy a bunch of it. Ice cream party. Hundreds of dollars of locally made ice cream. Just dishing it out. Literally.

Also, Mike K. and I have an old score to settle re: a controversial ending to a game of horseshoes. The more witnesses the better.

The local fellow was also in grocery stores. I guess they didn’t think to ask if they had a permit under the dairy act? I think cold comfort was as well.

Next time you are out and about, see if it’s still available.

That’ll be the next one to try. I should have gone for it, but thought the fruit one might be lighter and more refreshing for summer.

We’re going to sell a lot of ice cream this weekend.

Sorry, I goofed and posted this in the food services thread:

49 Below in Fernwood square? (and no, I'm not making a joke about how cold it was the other night, even though it was really cold)

So was I just blind re: that "49 Below 2 Go" location in Fernwood or is that brand new? It seems like they only sell tubs and mini-tubs? No scoops?

Personal admission: whenever I see a vacant unit somewhere I'll often ask myself "Why doesn't somebody put an ice cream place in there?"

It makes me happy to see the ice cream/gelato scene doing so well now, and especially with all of the neighbourhood locations. But I wouldn't mind a few more spots.

Either they have a permit to produce dairy or you delete these posts. :)

49 Below seems to be stocked in a ton of stores, so we assume they must have said license, right?

If we seriously aren't sure then I have no problem scrubbing this chatter.

Yah who knows. Cold comfort and one place here stocked stores too including bigger stores like country grocer without a production permit. It wasn’t until a wily viha inspector asked and the rug was pulled. Cold comforts case was in the news at the time. Our local one, well he just gave up and sells them at his own shop and only wholesales the non dairy stuff.

Also I always assume folks are running above board. I am sure the place mentioned in this thread is checking all the boxes.

I don’t think the manufacturing permit makes any difference in a public health capacity, it’s more to do with the cartel. :)

Hot summer weather, being waterfront and ice cream are a match made in heaven, and you can find that combination at Overboard Ice Cream.

The ice cream shop is hidden away under the Breakwater Bistro on Dallas Road.

“Everything is made with local ingredients, as organic as we can get them, no food dyes, no colouring,” Eve Broudlock, general manager of Overboard Ice Cream, said. “Our mint chip ice cream doesn’t have any green in it, it’s all natural flavours.”

“We have delicious waffle cones, we also have a gluten free cone, most of our ice creams are gluten free other than any that have pie bases.”
