Interesting turn of events.

Not a surprise, IIRC, OMG let go several people right after it acquired the Georgia Straight as well.

I didn’t realize until today that CanadaLand certified a year ago. Or at least got their first contract.

Tiny apparently owns a % of them as well.

I can't read the name "Canadaland" without picturing a children's board game.

One of the workers has updated a detail. She wasn’t laid off like she reported yesterday, she was fired, she says today.

Would this imply there was something afoot regarding unionizing? Does the employer not communicate the situation clearly enough to understand at the time whether you’re being fired or laid off? EI applies to one scenario and may not apply to the other, depending on why the individual was fired.

Yes. And any employer can fire anyone any time they want. There are of course separation terms.

Funny it took her a day to figure it out.

Once the union cards are submitted it becomes more difficult to get rid of the remainder though.

NOW just became one of Canada's only Black-owned publications — but rebuilding will be a struggle

The aftermath of the events left employees and contributors at NOW without pay. As of August 2022, employees say they worked 21 weeks despite not receiving their salaries. The Georgia Straight was acquired in September by Overstory Media Group (OMG). But NOW's new ownership was still left in limbo.

This month, however, the story took another major turn when the digital component of NOW Toronto was acquired by local journalist and Toronto resident Brandon Gonez. Once known for bringing patois to mainstream news as a CTV and CP24 journalist, the 30-year-old formed his growing media empire, Gonez Media Inc., in 2020.

For all practical purposes here there is no difference being what is described as a layoff vs being fired. Being laid off has a specific meaning under BC Labour laws but I don't think the intent was ever for OMG to bring anyone back and was just the term their employees chose to use.

I am sure they had a few days of content generated before the firings. Will see what things look like next week if they have not hired replacements.

Today they just linked Black Press articles on their newsletter.

I wonder if they will revert to just linking to other content or if any of the roles will be filled.

Ryan Hook is the interim food editor.

The Coast (Halifax) lists 7 team members, 6 of which have a published twitter account.  Just 2 updated with their union logo, although to be fair a few seem to post to twitter rarely.
