It doesn't have to be about the money though. Build the prestige/bragging rights can be enough. Remember, players don't get paid anything for NHL Playoffs/Stanley Cup.

Well, that's not quite accurate:

The team is not paying them any money for the playoffs, however the NHL does set aside a cash pool of money to be divided amongst the teams in the playoffs. The pool of money is divided between the teams in the playoffs based on how far they make it.

So a team losing in the first round will get a smaller portion than a team who wins the Stanley Cup.

Here are the playoff pools of money for some different past and future playoff years:

  • 2016-17 and 2017-18: $15 million
  • 2018-19 and 2019-20: $16 million
  • 2020-21 and 2021-22: $17 million

For the each player winning the Stanley Cup they will receive about $200,000 of that amount. For many players that would be a pay cut from the normal amount they make per game during the regular season.

How much is the Stanley Cup bonus?

Per the collective bargaining agreement, a team will get $2.25M for appearing in the Stanley Cup Finals and $3.75M for winning the Stanley Cup. The money is then divided between the players and management, typically on a pre-arranged structure decided by the team.

But I understand your sentiment.  But FIBA has an awful long way to go to be anything near a "world cup".

Oh I wasn't aware of that prize pool.

Anyways, yep. Basketball doesn't have anything prestigious at all, IMO. Kids who wanna make it big dream of playing for an NBA team.

Kids who wanna make it big in hockey dream of winning the Stanley Cup.

Kids who wanna make it big in football dream of winning the World Cup (or Super Bowl, depending on how you defined football).

Etc.

Kids who dream of playing in the NBA have never seen an NBA game in real life :)

True. In many cities, at least. In New Orleans probably everyone can afford a ticket.

Saw part of a news clip about the tallest teenager in the world (Olivier Rioux), and what his basketball dreams are. His words 'I don't know; NCAA for sure, maybe NBA'. He'd never seen an NBA game till 2022 or so.

I suspect if you ask high ranking hockey prospects, the answer is nearly always 'win the Stanley Cup'.

What I mean is, kids don’t realize how tall NBA players are.

The average height is 6’6”. Steve Nash looked like a kid on the court, and he’s 6’3”.
