Given that there are no residential neighbours, I expect the opposition to consist almost entirely of "lack of family-friendly 3BR units" and "so many apartments will cause traffic gridlock."

 

Fingers crossed no such issues arise.

This is so stupid. 1 and 2 bedroom apartments only? This is a family neighbourhood with a school right up the street and a major park right across the road from the development location. They NEED 3 bedroom units.

Question:  does this project encompass the shopping centre that's home to Mantra Restaurant and a few other businesses including an ice cream parlor and fish/chips shop, or is it only replacing the bingo building?  The bingo hall's footprint seems to be too small- on its own- to accommodate the whole development?

Just the bingo building. It's a fairly large property, most of it is parking.

Nice. That was/is a tired patch of land that was/is begging for new development/housing. Too bad IMO that it didn't encompass the entire site.

Locals said the property has long been considered an appropriate place for housing development and they’ve been waiting since 2005 to see action.

that statement seems odd on its own.  so then you read further into the article to try to get some context but none exists except the community association head making some positive comments and mentioning that date.  what's the 2005 date about?  what happened in 2005?   and what "locals" are they talking about?  since there has been no public meetings yet.

I remember that Tillicum was mulling residential construction in the parking lots. Was that around 2005, or did that come later?

 

Some sleuthing shows that the Tillicum-Burnside Action Plan was endorsed by Saanich Council in 2005.

There was some talk around 2010 of Rio Can moving the Montana’s and building S shaped residential along the Burnside portion of their parking lot. Our strata was approached, unofficially I think, regarding a potential land swap.

One day that whole 5 acre Parkside Place lot will be levelled and something better will come.
