President Trump announced on Monday that the federal government will distribute 150 million rapid, point-of-care coronavirus tests to states over the next few weeks, including to K-12 schools and vulnerable communities like nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Why it matters: The Trump administration has stressed the importance of reopening schools in allowing parents to return to work and jumpstarting the economy.

What's happening: Who gets tested is ultimately at the discretion of the governors, but the administration is encouraging schools to use the rapid tests to help restart and maintain in-person teaching.

  • The rapid tests, which deliver results in 15 minutes, will come from a previously announced supply of 150 million tests ordered from Abbott Laboratories. Teachers and parents would be able to test their children on a weekly basis.

  • 6.5 million tests will go out this week and a total of 100 million tests will be distributed to governors based on state population over the next several weeks, Trump announced.

The entire Montreal metropolitan area will be in the red zone, including heavily populated cities like Laval and Longueuil as the zone stretches into the surrounding regions.

The following new measures will take effect as of midnight Wednesday into Thursday in the three regions:

  • Ban on home gatherings, with some exceptions such as a single caregiver allowed per visit.

  • All bars, casinos and restaurants are closed (takeout only).

  • Libraries, museums, cinemas and theatres will also be closed.

  • Being less than two metres apart will be prohibited. Masks will be mandatory during demonstrations.

  • Houses of worship and venues for events like funerals and weddings will have a 25-person limit.

  • Hair salons, hotels and other such businesses will stay open.

  • Schools will remain open.

"Schools must remain open," Legault said. "Businesses are open so parents can continue to work and earn money."

The 267 cases announced Monday were identified over three reporting periods: 68 were recorded from Friday to Saturday, followed by 125 from Saturday to Sunday and 74 from Sunday to Monday.

Sounds like 2 of the 3 days were less cases than Friday's report (98).

this is canada.  so for all the people that say deaths trail by 2 weeks the data does not really say that.  at least not with the current wave.

1 MILLION COVID DEATHS WORLDWIDE

And so far this year more than 6.7m people have died of starvation which is preventable yet we have spent likely 1/1,000 of the resources to solve it.

At least we have a five-year baseline for that. Also you and me aren’t going to starve anytime soon probably can lose some pounds.

COVID-19 cases are spiking. Here’s why not to panic.

The second wave of COVID-19 is shaping up to be way less deadly than the first

Because you don't need a hazmat grade mask to contain the majority of spittle that comes out of your mouth.

but you need a good mask to filter intake of the virus.  like they wear at hospitals.

If you're walking into a room where someone has just sneezed and their sneeze droplets are still airborne, potentially the sneeze droplets can bypass the mask unless it's a fitted N95 mask.  But you're still missing the point - the mask is to drastically cut down on the amount of sneeze droplets.

Masks are primarily intended to protect others, not the wearer, but there are still benefits to the latter.

Can we please stop with the 'this is all a hoax' style of thinking? :)

Great. I just had my first “hey buddy, how’s it going? What the heck happened to that trucks of yours? And the kid getting that promotion at work is top notch!”

Blank stare.

Buddy was a spitting image of my actual buddy, thanks to the mask.

N95 too hot most of the time but summer is almost over. I’m using KN95 when flying/bus currently and high-quality surgical mask in stores, hotels and populated areas and disposed of after each store/bus/flight/etc.

A lot of times we are currently being told to wear “non-medical masks”(is there a n95 shortage still?) so you get weird looks if you’re wearing N95.
