2 more cases in Vancouver. Total of 4 cases in Vancouver now. That’s a lot, considering the entire rest of Canada only has 1. The entire US has 12 and the Uk has 2

Worth noting that 3 of the 4 in BC are confined to a single household. Two of the infected are visitors from Wuhan, and another is the person who they are visiting.

Also worth noting that Ontario has 3 cases, not 1.

7 total in Canada now.

More than 30,000 cases of the new coronavirus have been reported in China, with over 600 deaths. At least 60 people have tested positive and been quarantined on a cruise ship off Japan's coast.

China has been battling an outbreak of pneumonia-like illness, first detected in the central city of Wuhan in Dec. 2019, for over a month. The spate of illnesses is caused by a novel coronavirus, dubbed 2019-nCoV, which has now infected over 30,000 Chinese citizens and claimed more than 630 lives.

Very recently returned from China. The hype from the media and overreactions are causing significant problems for travel to and from China. Barely got out before the US banned foreigners from deplaning. Like I mean by hours. Scary stuff, and I don’t mean the virus. I was staying in an area fairly far from Hubei and everyone is masked up and virtually no one is outside. People are still on holiday and not at work. While the Chinese government probably acted too slowly in locking down cities in Hubei and was doing the usual Communist (quote unquote) crap of trying to cover up bad news at first, it is clear now that everyone is working hard to keep things from getting any worse than necessary.

A lot of the spread of the virus out of Wuhan is being attributed to people who were ill traveling outside of Wuhan to find a doctor because there weren’t enough in Wuhan. Does that sound like something that could happen in BC? I think there are a lot of lessons to learn from events in China.

The amount of screening done on both ends, however, was almost laughable. Shanghai airport was checking temperatures for Chinese travellers...but I was not checked. I joked I was too tall for them to reach with the infrared scanner. US border guard did not even ask where I had been in China. No thermal screening in airport. When landing in Canada after making my connection, the border guard as usual didn’t even ask me questions. The declaration computer asked if I’d been to Wuhan in the past 14 days but that is super easy to lie about. Not saying we need to be quarantining people but a little more in-depth questioning perhaps verified against travel in China? You can’t get on any inter-city transport without valid documentation so don’t tell me that’s not practical to track. In general I wish we’d do a better job at not letting sick people on planes. I’ve caught the flu twice from planes and innumerable colds.

PS, happy to answer questions about life in China at present from the perspective of a westerner!

has any non-east-asian got this virus?  yet alone died from it?

could it be that asians have a genetic difference that makes them more susceptible?

China spraying mystery chemicals in the streets, welding apartment doors shut, shutting down their manufacturing and basically entire economy, enforcing quarantine on hundreds of millions of people with paramilitary police patrolling the streets in hazmat suits, making not disclosing your infection punishable by death.
