^ Your perception is going to be different if you are 80 then if you are 20. UK infection rates are high but mortality is now about .2% - .3%. BC's mortality rate is higher but we do far less testing so in fact it is probably in the same range.

I'm 57 with an immunocompromised spouse....where should my perception fall? ;-)

Saudi Arabia General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) on Sunday said it has started operating airports at full capacity.

In a circular issued today to all airlines operating in the Kingdom's airports, including private aviation, GACA stated that the Kingdom would use the entire capacity of its airports to operate both domestic and international flights.

It noted that travellers' immunisation status would continue to be verified via the official Covid-19 contact tracing app, Tawakkalna.

The government also lifted social distancing measures and allowed full capacity attendance at the two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah for those who have taken the full dose of vaccines.

Maintaining physical distancing and wearing masks will continue to be applied in locations where health status checks are not applied through the Tawakkalna app.

Sports fans in the country are also allowed to attend full-capacity events at all stadiums and other sports facilities, the ministry of sports announced in a statement on Saturday.

The scene, which ended with the board voting to reimpose the mask rule, looked like so many other school board meetings across the country this year over coronavirus restrictions. But the Ankeny school board has become a larger flashpoint in the fight over mask mandates in schools, thanks in large part to a leather-clad, tomahawk-toting QAnon personality named Scott McKay.

*snip*

McKay inserted himself into the Ankeny mask debate in late August when he devoted an episode of his online Patriot Streetfighter talk show to the “Iowa Mama Bears,” Ankeny mothers Emily Peterson and Kimberly Reicks. The pair have become rising right-wing personalities for their opposition to mask requirements in Ankeny schools, hobnobbing with Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds ® and QAnon celebrities like former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn.

During the interview, the women urged McKay’s viewers to specifically contact pro-mask mandate Ankeny school board members Amy Tagliareni and Lori Lovstad.

McKay, who uses “fork” as a euphemism for “f***” in what’s become a sort of catchphrase for his fans, urged his audience in menacing terms to “carpet bomb these boneheads with emails” and “beat the **** out of them.”

“You forkin’ scumbags will not walk away from this clean,” McKay said in his video, addressing the school board members. “Believe me. Because when this army, the Patriot Streetfighter nation comes at you, you’re forked. So I would say, run the white flag up the pole now because if you haven’t realized at this point with these ladies that they’re coming, all you shitheads, there will be nowhere to run. There’s nowhere to run. You’re all hypocrites, you’re forkin’ scumbag losers.”
McKay said he wanted to see a world where officials like Lovestad and Tagliareni were “yelled at” and “scorned” wherever they went.

“Ok, Lori Lovestad, you now have been called because this particular episode is probably going to get about half-a-million to a million views,” McKay said, later adding, “You want to be famous, now you are.”

In the school-board video, McKay also promoted the idea of using violence against police officers who enforce coronavirus restrictions.

“Sooner or later, we the people show up with arms, outnumbering you 50-to-1,” McKay said. “Then at that point, you’re going to have a decision to make. Do you want to go home, or do you not want to go home to your family?”

McKay didn’t respond to a request for comment. Lovestad, citing concerns for her and her family’s safety ahead of an anticipated Patriot Streetfighter event in Iowa, declined to comment.

McKay’s ability to direct his audience to harass the school-board members demonstrates hyper-partisan anger now targeted at school board officials across the country. And it reveals how the right’s focus on school boards this year has allowed fringe figures who openly advocate for violence to grab the spotlight.

Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran withheld the salaries of all Leon County School Board members Friday, even though the district walked back its COVID-induced mask rule this week.

In a letter to the district, Corcoran said that even though parents have the ultimate authority on whether their child wears a mask to school under the new local policy, it also requires asymptomatic children to wear a mask if they wish to return to school during the seven-day quarantine period.

That, he said, does not comply with the state's own new emergency rule.

The Florida Department of Education will withhold the members' salaries every month until they comply with the emergency rule, which is dated Oct. 12. Members make about $40,000 a year, so the department is withholding about $17,000 altogether each month.

On Facebook, board member Alva Striplin posted a photo of Corcoran's letter and wrote, "Lost my salary today."

Exhausted after working long hours during the coronavirus pandemic and resentful that their bosses are not sharing sometimes huge profits, tens of thousands of nurses, laborers and entertainment workers are going on strike across the United States.

If they fail to reach agreement with the Hollywood studios on a new collective bargaining contract, 60,000 members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees plan to strike on Monday. The IATSE includes cinematographers, hairdressers, makeup artists and sound editors.

Some 31,000 employees of the Kaiser Permanente healthcare group in the western states of California and Oregon are also poised to strike soon.

Since Thursday, 10,000 employees of the John Deere farm equipment company have been on strike; while 1,400 workers walked off the job at the Kellogg's cereal company on October 5, and more than 2,000 employees of Mercy Hospital in Buffalo, New York, began striking on October 1.

The sudden rash of strikes this month has even led some to coin the word "Striketober," a neologism since embraced on social media even by prominent progressive Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

During the pandemic, workers say, they often had to bear extra burdens to make up for others who were staying home.

"We've sacrificed our time with our families, we missed ballgames with our kids and dinners and weddings, in order to keep boxes of cereal on the shelves," said Dan Osborn, a mechanic at Kellogg's for 18 years.

"And this is how we're getting repaid," he continued, "by asking us to take concessions at a time when the CEO and executives have taken increases in their compensation."

*snip*

Most of the strikes are motivated by demands for better working conditions, said Kate Bronfenbrenner, who specializes in union and labor issues at Cornell University in New York.

"Companies are making more profits than ever, and workers are being pushed to work harder than ever, sometimes risking their lives to go back to work in the context of Covid," she said.

So when employers refuse to compromise, Bronfenbrenner added, "workers are less willing to ratify contracts they feel don't meet their needs."

The exact number of strikes now under way is difficult to know, as the US government keeps track only of those affecting more than 1,000 employees.

But the movement has grown since a 2018 strike by West Virginia teachers, said Josh Murray, a sociology professor at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee.

The video linked here is going to be controversial. I present it neither to frighten nor even enlighten, but just so people understand there is not a one-size-fits-all answer to our current health crisis.

Exactly where is that trooper going to go? Almost any work place is going to require vaccination. About their only option will be to start their own business. And not everyone is suited for that.

This video is from a group of conspiracy-peddlers. It has slick production quality that makes it look convincing, but most or all of the participants have no expertise with viruses or vaccines. Oh, and the founder was arrested for being part of the Jan 6 Capitol riot.

I am willing to entertain numerous points of view and come to my own conclusions. Let's just say I don't trust anyone to be telling me the whole truth.

:-) Lies! The production quality is not slick at all. Looks like a one-camera shoot, and the edits are terrible.

I'm quite curious to see what that basketball player does.

He is losing $381,000 per game.

He has believed in some "conspiracy theories" in the past.  Like flat earth.

I personally don't care about these folks at all.

I don't care what their reasoning is.

I don't care what their outcome is.

I basically don't care about them or their stories.

People around the world make their own decisions every single day of the year, and many of those decisions carry with them very dire consequences.

Make your bed ... and go quietly lie in it.

Or get vaccinated, and let the world move one step further towards putting COVID-19 in the rear view mirror.

The politicization of COVID-19 will go down as mankind's lowest medical moment to date.

The politicians that politicized COVID-19 to feed their self-aggrandizing political agendas should be locked up for life.

I’m not sure if you understand that COVID is not going away with this vaccine.

We have to live with it.

And people around the world are at our mercy for the vaccine. I’m hearing more anger towards the few who remain unvaccinated, than concern for the masses around the world who have no choice to get vaccinated.

Ontario is reporting 373 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, the eighth day in a row the count is fewer than 500. The provincial case total now stands at 595,235.

Of the 373 new cases recorded, the data showed 214 were unvaccinated people, 17 were partially vaccinated people, 108 were fully vaccinated people and for 34 people the vaccination status was unknown.

it's all politicized.

Today Florida is the #48 state for new infections over the last 7 days.  The New York rate is DOUBLE.  Yet people ate still blaming DeSantis for doing the wrong thing.  Nobody will complain about New York.

Minnesota and Michigan are 4x worse than Florida.

ALBERTA:

The past week has seen active cases in the province drop to below 13,000 for the first time since Sept. 1 while hospitalizations dropped to 1,000 with 229 patients in the ICU. All of those numbers are down from their marks at the beginning of the week with the province’s most recently reported R-value remaining below 1 at .92. Health officials, including Alberta Health Services president Dr. Verna Yiu, said they are feeling more optimistic about the overall situation than they did several weeks ago.
