I'm sure somewhere in the tiny recesses of his mind our imperious leader must occasionally envy - even if only an itty bitty bit - despotic totalitarian regimes like China or North Korea which would simply call in a few army brigades and send in several hundred tanks, helicopters and drones and be done with this protesting nonsense. Naturally in liberal democratic capitalist societies that's not how we typically deal with (peaceful) civil protest.

Not according to councillor Isitt. He posted an image of a group of First Nations being closed in on by soldiers, helicopters, tanks, an armoured personnel carrier, even the cavalry and an excavator, titled “What reconciliation looks like in Canada 2020.”

What a complete and utter idiot. This is classic Nazi/Soviet style propaganda. If he's pushing this he isnt taking a neutral position, he's immersed in it

An interesting op-ed piece in today's TC.

...It might make you feel better to stand in front of a bridge or stop a railway crossing, but what you are really doing is turning public opinion against First Nations who never asked for your “help” in the first place...The bottom line is First Nations want to be independent from the Indian Act funding, and we definitely want to break the cycle of poverty that was passed down to us...

Out-of-scope SJW influence is also taking hold in the Saanich council chamber.

Coun. Nathalie Chambers is choosing to look at the postponement of her motion for Saanich to stand in solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en people who oppose the Coastal GasLink pipeline as a chance to garner support...While several members of the public indicated support during the council meeting, one resident pointed out that the motion is based on personal ideology and is not a municipal matter...

How can councilors be kept to their area of jurisdiction?    I wish there was a lawyer who would take this on Pro Bono and sue one or more councils on behalf of voters to get a declaration that is illegal for councilors to do crap like this.

VicPD:

2 protesters were arrested for mischief this morning by Legislative Assembly Protection Services officers after multiple protesters began spraying a substance on the walls, driveways & sidewalks.

The spraying occurred at several locations around the building. Some of the messages sprayed included profanity.

Two of the protesters were arrested for mischief, identified & escorted from the grounds. Efforts to determine what the substance is & how to clean it are underway.

Our officers remain on scene to ensure protests remain safe, peaceful and lawful. Our investigations into the mischiefs are ongoing.

I don't think anyone who ever met Ben walked away thinking, "Wow, what a smart guy!" Imagine how much better shape Victoria might be in if we had a councilor whose world-view had developed beyond adolescence.

Frightening that he is also apparently a Trump-style father figure to several other councillors.

I cannot imagine who these thousands of Victorians are who cast their votes for him. If I ever encounter one of them, I will have a few questions...

Here is a feed of protesters jumping in front of a moving freight train and then being surprised it doesn't screech to an immediate stop.  Then they start burning things.

I checked Issit's picture above and realized that it isn't a heart that kid is holding up it's a gas can.

An interesting op-ed piece in today's TC.

Interesting in that the "public opinion" is deemed of some value.

Again, I doubt the protesters value the opinion of the "public".  This is becoming a war between nations.

You know, I'm not so fast jumping on the "outside agitator" bandwagon.

A lot of the Freedom Riders in the US south were outside agitators, many from elite northern colleges and wealthy liberal families, one was even a liberal UBC student poking his nose into another society's business..

Indigenous rights is a sticky situation and I don't know how to fix it but the one thing I do know and I think you do too is that the status quo is unacceptable.

Is anyone surprised to see the same faces at different protests?

It is the nature of politics on the left or right fringe (or NIMBY fringe) to have a small group of passionate and misguided people to show up over and over again.   What you should take to heart is that if you can identify the people the movement is very small and will not manage much.

Perhaps slightly OT, but there was a darkly funny comment in the National Post this morning to an article about public reaction to the blockades:

"When Pierre Trudeau faced anarchy he said 'just watch me' and called in the army.

When Justin Trudeau faced anarchy he seemed to say 'I'll just watch' then put on his invisibility cloak and disappeared."

Meanwhile there are videos of protestors perplexed that a train didn’t stop for their blockade...

Rebel Media touched on this topic some years ago, including Toronto Sun and a few other media organizations considered right wing. Not only were the same protesters showing up at protests for different causes but a number of protesters at least were professionals, paid by multiple organizations to either be on site to protest or to get people organized to show.

My questions for this protest are many. Questions like who is financially backing this protest? What do they have to gain? Who are the professional protestors? What protests have they appeared at? Why are the Mohawks involved? What do the Mohawks have to gain?

So I had a quick search just to satisfy my curiosity. It would take a lot more research but my understanding thus far of at least the hereditary chiefs and their stake in this protest is one of money and power. This makes them at odds with the interests of the company behind the Coastal GasLink and the elected chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en.

The hereditary chiefs are documented as the old system of chiefs before people from Europe settled on what would eventually become Canada and the United States. A hereditary chief is a head of a clan and each clan has a territory and only a hereditary chief owns that territory. Chiefs can be appointed only by other chiefs through means of believed reincarnation (not always through blood relation).

Elected chiefs are considered not to be the true chiefs of the Wet’suwet’en and therefore are not deemed to be the caretakers of the land. What this means is any deals or decisions made by the elected chiefs are considered null and void. Negotiations can only be made through the hereditary chiefs.

Wet’suwet’en territory is claimed by the hereditary chiefs to be much larger then what exists now and is currently occupied by people not of the Wet’suwet’en.

The current talks between the Feds and province and the hereditary chiefs are being billed, not surprisingly, as "productive." But really there doesn't seem to be much actual room for compromise.

The pipeline is either completed or it isn't.

The route is either changed or it isn't (rerouting seems unlikely.)

Maybe the chiefs can be brought onside with more money or future draft picks (some process agreement that gives them more say in other disputes.) That might happen, but it would seem to undercut their professed "save the land" position.

In any case, their influence on all the other copy cat protests is probably minimal. Some other noble reason for blocking trains, etc will certainly appear. It's fun! And I have no doubt that some of them are being paid by the usual sources.
