A local family has owned this almost 20-hectare (49-acre) forested property for nearly 50 years. Recognizing the ecological and community values of the property, the family has been pursuing a permanent conservation option for this urban forest for many years. Now, partnering with the Capital Regional District (CRD) and Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT) the family has entered an agreement to sell the property to the CRD so that it can be permanently designated an urban forest park.

Habitat Acquisition Trust (HAT) reached its fundraising goal in partnership with the Capital Regional District, which donated $2 million toward the conservation of Mountain Road Forest.

The Greater Victoria community came together with over 1,400 donors to the campaign, which raised $1.12 million, enough with the CRD portion to cover the $3 million purchase price of the property.

“The CRD needed the community to meet them halfway to raise the full amount,” HAT executive director Katie Blake said in a release Wednesday.

While the campaign fell short of the original goal of $1.4 million, it illustrated how nature creates a powerful connection between people and the earth, she said.

Somewhat restricted access to this area.

I posit we'll see parking issues almost immediately, followed up by numerous and repeat complaints from the local residents who haven't seen a single strangers car parked on their street in 3 decades.
