‘It’s hard on everyone’: Alberni’s Amber Manthorne now missing for six months
Jan 7, 2023
Clinging to a Nanaimo overpass Saturday, Kristie St. Claire said she hoped it wouldn’t come to this. Six months since her friend Amber Manthorne vanished from her Port Alberni home, there are still no answers.
So St.Claire hung banners bearing Manthorne’s picture in Nanaimo and Port Alberni on the six-month anniversary of her disappearance as the missing woman’s loved ones try desperately to keep the case from going cold.
Amber Manthorne was last seen alive on July 7, 2022.
Dozens of police and community searches combed around the 40-year-old’s home and where her Jeep mysteriously turned up 120 kilometres away in a Nanaimo area ditch. Her ex-boyfriend, who she was going to visit when she disappeared, has been interviewed and denied responsibility, and now updates from RCMP have stopped coming.
RCMP also continue to investigate the disappearance of 45-year-old Laura Huebner from Nanaimo in April 2022.
“I’m not optimistic, just because of the situation. Just because the last we heard, she went on a boat with a strange man,” Huebner’s friend Danika Wright told CHEK News in May 2022.

It looks like you are trying to make those appear as part of the news clip or investigation.
Maybe clarify your intentions here?

They were part of previous articles/clips on the events described. Just thought I'd add a little value. I should label them as such I suppose.

I just think putting up a persons full name and photo associating them with missing (probably murdered) people is more Reddit than VV style.

I didn't invent the connection - those were widely reported (and discussed on VV) at the time of the disappearances.

Victoria, BC – This Sunday, people will gather to remember and honour Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have gone missing or who have been murdered. Starting by gathering in front of Our Place at 919 Pandora Avenue at 11:30 am, the Stolen Sisters March will temporarily pause traffic as they march down Pandora Avenue to Government Street, and then to the Legislature. There, the group will gather to hear speakers, sing songs and share food.
VicPD officers will be on scene to help ensure that marchers are safe.
We at VicPD both recognize and remember all Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have gone missing or have been murdered, as well as honour their families, loved ones and communities. We do so in part by continuing our search for missing Esquimalt Indigenous woman Belinda Cameron in our effort to help her family find answers. We are asking anyone with information to come forward and share what they know.
Belinda Cameron, a mother to two young girls, was confirmed to have last been seen on May 11, 2005. Belinda was last seen at Esquimalt’s Shoppers Drug Mart in the 800-block of Esquimalt Road that day. Belinda was reported missing nearly a month later, on June 4, 2005. Officers conducted an extensive investigation and a series of searches for Belinda.
At the time of her disappearance, Belinda was a 42-year-old Indigenous woman who stood five feet, eight inches tall with a medium to large build, and weighed approximately 170 pounds. Belinda had long, dark brown hair that she wore parted in the middle, and dark brown eyes. She wore silver-framed glasses. Two pictures of Belinda are below.
Belinda’s disappearance is considered suspicious and investigators believe that Belinda was the victim of foul play. Her disappearance continues to be investigated as a homicide. Belinda’s daughters are now adults and are seeking to understand their mother’s disappearance. Our detectives are committed to bringing closure to Belinda’s family and believe that somebody knows what happened to Belinda.
If you have any information on where Belinda Ann Cameron may be, or what may have happened to her, you are asked to call our Historical Case Review Office as 250-995-7390, or call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Cyndy Hall holds one of the similar signs stolen in recent weeks from the Bowen Rd./Dufferin Cres. area.
SENSELESS THEFT
‘It’s very hurtful:’ advocate furious with repeat incidents of stolen signs
Apr 20, 2023
NANAIMO —– Cyndy Hall hopes the motives behind stolen missing signs profiling her long-lost friend aren’t sinister.
A second round of signs on Bowen Rd. highlighting the disappearance of Lisa Marie Young went missing this week, amounting to seven stolen signs in total.
“Lisa was seen calling and texting from Bowen Rd., it just meant a lot to us to put them on Bowen Rd,” Hall told NanaimoNewsNOW on Bowen Rd. at Dufferin Cres. as she replaced the stolen signs on Thursday, April 20.
Lisa Marie Young was last known to be alive in the early morning hours of June 30, 2002, when she had a troubling phone exchange with a since deceased friend.
Young, who was 21-years-old at the time, indicated she was being held against her will in the driveway of a Bowen Rd. home.
Hall said area businesses were aware the signs were posted and was not aware of anybody taking issue with them.
Hall has met resistance during relentless efforts to help advance Young’s case, including during physical searches for her remains.
“I do wonder if the person taking them wants silence about Lisa and why. I know that’s just speculation, but of course we’ll think that.”
Nanaimo RCMP believe Young was a homicide victim.
An annual march of justice for Young takes place on Sunday, June 25 starting from the Nanaimo RCMP detachment at 11 a.m.

INVESTIGATIVE PODCAST
Podcaster shines light on dark Whiskey Creek triple homicide
May 9, 2023
NANAIMO — The day after Halloween in 2020 two men and a woman were found dead and another man seriously wounded at a rural Whiskey Creek property.
Since then very little has been publicly disclosed about the killings, which NanaimoNewsNOW verified in the days following the incident resulted in the deaths of Shawn McGrath and girlfriend Shanda Wilson.
Their bodies were found in a burned-out travel trailer on private property home to a gravel pit.
No arrests or charges have been laid.
Vancouver Island-based podcaster Laura Palmer debuted a seven-episode series on Tuesday, May 9, titled ‘Whiskey Creek.’
“I’m hoping once people hear more about them and also more about Shawn that they may feel differently and not write this off as ‘well, just a bunch of bad people doing bad things out in the woods,” Palmer told NanaimoNewsNOW.
McGrath, 52, had a lengthy criminal record, and Palmer said had the tattoo ‘crazy’ across his back.
The RCMP’s Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit won’t provide updates on the investigation, other than to acknowledge it’s an active file.
She wonders if the lack of public discussion about the case is connected to the fact the incident happened at an encampment home to the unhoused.
“Those are the kinds of things that give this story hopefully a little more meaning and context than just a headline about three people dying in this horrible way out in the woods.”
Palmer embarked on ‘Whiskey Creek’ after receiving an email from the mother of one of the victims.
Palmer’s series is available free of charge on multiple podcast platforms.

Anyone old enough to remember the disappearance in the Port Renfrew area of mushroom picker Doug Griffiths from Cowichan Lake?
It was in 1982.
Was he ever found?
While the search was on for Griffiths, there were a couple of reports of a man encountered in the area who at each contact, took off like a scared rabbit.

The posters are placed each year showing a young, vibrant woman, just starting out in life. Like many others her age, she had hopes, dreams and aspirations. Sadly, her friends and family can only wonder what life had in store for Lisa Marie. It all changed, when, in the early morning hours of June 30, 2002, she disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again.
This year marks the 21st year of Lisa Marie Young’s disappearance. The Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Unit continue to investigate her disappearance and believe she met with foul play, and are treating it as a homicide. Even with Nanaimo experiencing an unprecedented increase in homicides, which require significant resources to investigate, this investigation has continued to be a priority with their Unit. Over the years, investigators have received hundreds of tips, have interviewed as many people, conducted numerous searches, and have diligently followed up on old and new information, said Reserve Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
At 11 AM on Sunday June 25, 2023, friends, family and the community at large will come together outside the Nanaimo RCMP detachment for song, prayer and words to mark and acknowledge Lisa Marie’s disappearance. Those in attendance will then march to the pavilion at Maffeo Sutton Park. We want the public to know that this investigation continues to move forward. If you have information that you have never shared with police, now is the time to do so. It’s never too late, said O’Brien.
If you have information on the disappearance of Lisa Marie Young, please call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
