Here he is again

Alcohol should have cancer warning labels, say doctors and researchers pushing to raise awareness of risk

"Even drinking one drink a day increases your risk of some cancers — including, if you're a woman, breast cancer — but also cancers of the digestive system, the mouth, stomach," said Tim Stockwell, a senior scientist with the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria.

"The risk increases with every drink you take."

From the US Surgeon General:

“Alcohol is a well-established, preventable cause of cancer responsible for about 100,000 cases of cancer and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the United States – greater than the 13,500 alcohol-associated traffic crash fatalities per year in the US – yet the majority of Americans are unaware of this risk,” Murthy said in a statement.

...

Increasingly, evidence has mounted against alcohol consumption because of its health risks, negating a decades-long perception that some alcohol – especially red wine – could benefit health.

Still, nuances persist: A report in December from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine concluded that moderate drinking – two drinks a day or fewer for men and one for women – may be associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease. It also found that moderate drinking was associated with a higher risk of certain types of cancer.

A customer enjoys a non-alcoholic beverage at Hekate Cafe and Elixer Lounge on January 20, 2023 in New York City. Alcohol-free bars, dance parties and “sober curious” events in New York City are experiencing an uptick in popularity with people drinking less and looking for alternative solutions to enjoying nightlife not centered around alcohol.

“There was actually a time when we thought red wine increases risk of some cancers, but the positive effects for cardiovascular disease overwhelm the negative effects for cancer,” said Dr. Otis Brawley, an oncologist at Johns Hopkins University and former chief medical and scientific officer for the American Cancer Society.

Over the past three years, however, a steady stream of scientific evidence and comprehensive research reviews have disproved that idea.

“People need to be warned,” Brawley said. “There is no safe amount of alcohol.

Maybe it's time for a broad legal and social prohibition of alcohol? Unprecedented circumstances call for unprecedented measures.

Maybe it’s not so bad.

The experts also said, just a few years ago, that fentanyl is so dangerous that a grain of sand will kill a person if they come in contact with it. Now it’s everywhere, and the concerns have disappeared.

Legal doesn't work. Maybe raising the age to 21 to match the US?

Social, I think is happening as Gen Z doesn't seem to be nearly as big on drinking as previous generations. Other vices in play of course... there's always something, I guess.

Prohibition doesn’t work, only safe supply and then shame/stigma/control.

Drinking rates are way down, are they not?
