Nice to see the program once again emerging as a force; I played rugby my last two years at UVic and we were all privileged to see up close and hang with those powerful UVic men's b-ball teams of the 80's which won as I recall something like seven national championships in eight years and generally ran amok over all Canadian and some American competition back in the day.

We Are the Champions may seem standard fare now after title games but it never grows old when it is played for you. The University of Victoria Vikes players cut down the net and mingled with fans on the floor Friday night following their 95-80 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in the Canada West men’s basketball championship game before a jammed standing-room-only crowd of 2,300 on Ken and Kathy Shields Court in CARSA gym.
“It’s a different feeling winning a championship at home,” said UVic fifth-year forward Dominick Oliveri, who was also part of the team that won the conference championship game last season in Edmonton against the Alberta Golden Bears.

UVic is the top seed for the 2023 national championship tournament this week at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, N.S., after dispatching the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 95-80 in the Canada West championship game last weekend before a capacity crowd on Ken and Kathy Shields Court at CARSA Gymnasium.
The Vikes (20-3 in regular season and playoffs) open nationals with a quarter-final game Friday at 4 p.m. PT against the Atlantic conference finalist and eighth-seed University of Prince Edward Island Panthers (16-2 in regular season and playoffs).
The last time UVic was the top seed for nationals was in 2006, when the Vikes lost to Carleton 73-67 in the championship game. It is part of the Ravens’ remarkable run of 16 national titles since 2003. Carleton is the holder and has won three consecutive national championships and 10 in the past 11 seasons. The only other teams to have won a national title in Carleton’s two-decade era of dominance have been the Brock Badgers in 2008, Saskatchewan Huskies in 2010 and Calgary Dinos in 2018.

Blown out. St. FX was ranked #4.
The Atlantic champion St. Francis Xavier X-Men from Antigonish, backed by a roaring crowd of 7,350, defeated the Canada West champion and top-ranked University of Victoria Vikes 77-64 in the U Sports men’s basketball national championship semifinals.

The University of Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team is now 21-0 after defeating the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades in front of a packed home crowd during the Canada West quarterfinals.
“You gotta bring 40 minutes, and you gotta be prepared to fight the entire way,” said Vikes head coach Murphy Burnatowski.
“Credit to them—for most of the game, it was really close, but we were able to pull away at the end of the day.”

Geoffrey James is known as the silent assassin and he shot the University of Victoria Vikes into their first U Sports national men’s basketball championship game in nearly two decades. James, who doesn’t get a lot of recognition on the loaded UVic roster despite his penchant for timely baskets, scored 21 points as the Vikes defeated the University of Ottawa Gee Gees 89-75 in the national semifinals Friday night at Doug Mitchell Arena on the UBC campus.
UVic Vikes head coach Murphy Burnatowski labelled James as “unshakable” and a player “who doesn’t seek out the limelight because he doesn’t care about that and is a veteran who doesn’t get too high or too low.”
But he will get the limelight on Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Vikes play in the CBC and Sportsnet broadcast national championship game for the first time since 2006 when the Vikes lost to Carleton during the Ravens’ unprecedented run of 17 national titles between 2003 and 2023.

Renoldo Robinson had 24 points and nine rebounds as the University of Victoria Vikes defeated the Calgary Dinos 82-53 on Sunday to win their U Sports men’s basketball title in 28 years.
The fourth-seeded Vikes also gained some revenge for a 77-68 loss to Calgary in last month’s Canada West semifinal.
Robinson, a six-foot-three guard from Montreal, also had one assist and was named Victoria’s player of the game. In the fourth quarter he made a highlight-reel play, snagging a ball, weaving through defenders, then scoring on a layup.
