He was interesting to listen to when chairing the CRD Transportation Board, very derisive of their bumpkin-like attempts at motion-making by some board members.

Saanich has a new mayor. Murdock just squeaked by Haynes. Not sure this is a good thing.

Under Mayor Sid in View Royal, is the municipality going to fast-track or slow-down its stranglehold on traffic flow? View Royal is the single-most disruptive municipality for people just trying to get to work and back home.

A losing North Saanich candidate for mayor predicts stagnation in that community thanks to the influence of Save North Saanich on the tnew council, while a returning councillor says the new council will listen broadly while welcoming the results of the election.

These positions from long-time North Saanich councillor Murray Weisenberger, who finished third to mayor-elect Peter Jones, and returning councillor Celia Stock were just among the many reactions making the rounds after Saturday’s municipal election.

Weisenberger said North Saanich will go back to being what he called “Sleepyville” in predicting that the new council under Jones will not pursue an ambitious agenda.


“Nobody will pay any attention as long as the rest of the region remains asleep to what North Saanich is about, which is privilege,” he said. “And as far as I can tell, Mr. Jones doesn’t really plan to do anything, so that is going to save a whole lot of energy.”

Jones also appears to be grappling for the best way forward around the OCP review, said Weisenberger.

What if this guy doesn’t know how to drive in the snow, but with buses being cancelled he had to risk it? What if what Mersereau thought was a man, wasn’t?

We later learn it was a BMW SUV. I suppose it could have been just about anything. I assumed it would have been a pick-up.

Women are far worse drivers though, based on collisions per mile driven.

 

 

 

After studying years worth of traffic data, researchers at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh determined that men are more than twice as likely to die in a car crash as women. Although men drive more than women do (approximately 60 per cent more, on average) their risk of a serious crash is still higher on a per-mile basis. Researchers found that women took shorter trips than men, and had a higher number of minor accidents. But men are 70 per cent more likely to be involved a serious crash.

A new study suggests that women, in fact, may be more dangerous behind the wheel than men.

 

Researchers at the University of Michigan analyzed 6.5 million car crashes in the U.S. between 1998 and 2007. Female drivers were found to be involved in 68.1 percent of all crashes, according to The Daily Mail.

 

The results are especially surprising given that men were found to drive 60 percent of the time, while women only 40 percent. In other words, women got in more accidents despite driving less than the opposite sex.

Women likely agree, too.   When a mixed-gender pair are in the front seats of a car, 95% of the time the male drives.

As the year comes to an end and the region’s new municipal councils get their bearings, we caught up with Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins. Re-elected in October for a fifth term, Desjardins has spent 14 years as head of the township, making her the longest serving mayor in the region.

 

A lot of change is on the horizon for Esquimalt over the next four years, with a new active transportation plan, ongoing development, steps to attract more doctors to the area, and perhaps a whole new policing agreement separate from the joint agreement it currently has with Victoria.

 

In this Q&A, Desjardins lays out her impressions of what Esquimaltonians are looking for in their community and how council must strike a balance between growth and preservation.

Saanich councillor Teale Bondaroff wants to leave for a month to do research somewhere unrelated to his duties as councillor. There was no plan to reimburse the taxpayer for the absence, but it will be considered if that’s what Saanich taxpayers want, according to Grumpy Taxpayers.
