Ol sparky, most recreational drones just use radio signal to communicate with the controller. They do use GPS for navigation, a bit different. And the manufacturers don't properly geofence the no fly zones.

I'm going to go to 1050 Yates when time permits with my DJI and see what it will let me do.

Before I take off at home it tells me about a height restriction because I am under a flight path. I don't think it will let me fly in restricted airspace even if I had a permit .

Stay tuned.

My drone barely speaks with me since I flew it into a tree about 2 years ago.

It is certainly illegal to fly drones downtown without a permit. You are within 3 NM of the inner harbor airport.

https://nrc.canada.ca/en/drone-tool/

I am flying a 249 gram drone. I am aware of the risks. I always fly below the tallest buildings around me and have the drone in line of sight. This is a 249 gram drone. If you go to the website above and select the map for <250g you will see this:

Exercise a high degree of caution due to potential aircraft traffic around airports/heliports. Drone operations when other aircraft are present and/or in the vicinity of airports/heliports are strongly discouraged, and may be considered negligent or reckless. Refer to “Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)” section for recommended best practices.
What does this mean?
900.06 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations states:

"No person shall operate a remotely piloted aircraft system in such a reckless or negligent manner as to endanger or be likely to endanger aviation safety or the safety of any person."

The red outlined yellow shape on the map shows the most likely areas where aircraft traffic patterns may occur around this certified airport/heliport. Operating in this area is not recommended. Drone pilots operating in these areas are warned that flying when other aircraft are present, and/or in the vicinity of the airport/heliport land may, depending on the circumstances, be considered reckless or negligent under CAR 900.06. The drone pilot needs to exercise extreme caution and vigilance.

If you chose to fly in this area and see other aircraft operating it is recommended to land, stop flying, and reassess the situation. If you notice regular aircraft activities here it is recommended to contact the aerodrome operator to better understand the local traffic patterns and to coordinate your operations
