Another one is sunrise place, massive drop on one side down to the houses below.

Maybe I do not understand the difference between a ditch and a valley in this case. One will swallow a truck, one will swallow 15 trucks.

It’s a small ditch in that link. Then a gnarly drop-off on the other side (definitely not a ditch).

Know it all.

There are no ditches that wide or that deep in our area, in fact the only ditches I can think of that are that big are over in Delta, designed as they are to drain a massive flood plain.

Certainly if you go off the road into a ditch in Delta, you're guaranteed a rollover, and perhaps a drowning.

Going off the "new" road to Bamfield still looks like it would tilt towards potentially being the end of you.

Even the topic of roadside ditches can put a gulf between us and pit us against one another. It's a slippery slope.

That’s like 2/3 of the roads on salt spring

Hence the island's tourism slogan: ditch your car and walk.

Interesting. I guess I don’t see the difference in practical terms. The road is there and then it’s straight down, onto houses below.

I don’t know when I’ll be up there next, but I’ll try to take better photos. It’s hard to convey in my photo above.

Yes, bad road design.

The new Bamfield road has unusually deep ditches alongside both sides. All I’m saying is, the way people drive those roads, is we can expect more accidents.

Maybe bring a 1/1 scale model of your truck with you and put it inside the ditch before you take the photo.

Deep ditches make for great neighbours.

I’ll just use cars already in the ditch for reference.

Make sure you ask the occupants for permission first. You could offer them a sip of water to sweeten the deal.

I think of you edged off Churchill Drive here you’d likely be in peril.

How many f350’s would fit in that ditch?

I grew up on the mainland. The Fraser valley is full of roads with ditches like that. Heck, much deeper than that. Bamfield Main is fine. Like Matt said, keep your stick on the ice.

Long, straight stretches of road, not windy, hilly and often covered in fog roads.

As (likely) the only person here who’s seen this road, maybe see it first for yourself, before making up your mind.

I dunno, the Google view I shared is windy, hilly, and often fog covered. There is no ditch, just a steep bank down. I guess that’s better than a ditch tho, because a tree or a house will likely break your fall!

Just get an Abrams which should be able to navigate the ditch. Just be aware that the squeeshy sound is you going over a Tesla.
