On Friday night, hundreds flocked to Cattle Point for a pop-up DJ party whose location was only revealed a few hours prior via text.

The event was the brainchild of Vancouver-based electronic producer and DJ Taelor Deitcher, who is also known by his stage name, Felix Cartal.

It’s the second pop-up outdoor DJ set the artist has staged this summer in conjunction with his recent studio album release, Into Sunsets.

“Victoria is a pretty easy rip on the ferry, so we just kind of went for it,” Deitcher said.

Deitcher and videographer Kyle S. Lee organized the entire event within 48 hours with rented equipment from Long and McQuade and some unloading help from Damon Langford, owner of Eclipse Events.

Poor choice of venue for pop-up concert

Re: “Hundreds flock to Cattle Point for surprise DJ concert,” July 25.

Cattle Point (other than the nearby Trial Islands ecological reserve) is home to some of the rarest and most endangered ecosystems and plants in all of Canada.

The bluff that Felix Cartal staged their pop-up concert at has been facing years of degradation from off trail use that compacts the soils and threatens these extremely rare plant communities.

The choice of venue was far from ideal. These plants are federally protected, and our students at UVic, along with dedicated community members have been working for years to protect and restore these ecosystems.

Part of this work has been engaging with the public and educating people to tread lightly and leave room for nature.

Happy that the get-together was a success. Dismayed at the choice of location.

A question I asked rhetorically at the time was whether this pop-up DJ event was permitted by the Municipality of Oak Bay specifically for Cattle Point?

If it was permitted, there is definitely a strong argument to me made that it shouldn't have been permitted.

If it wasn't permitted, would that not open the door to legal action against the promoters on the part of the Municipality?

Look at the bright side. The controversy creates a perfect opportunity for further restrictions re: public access to Cattle Point.

It was free.

When does a get-together with many friends become an “event”?

A legitimate take on what can be a typical knee-jerk response to abuse of protected public lands, but doesn't answer the question asked.

Was it, or was it not a permitted event by Oak Bay?

Being a rather unique, and protected ecosystem does make what goes on at Cattle Point "matter", but not giving a crap works too.

My real question is simply whether this was an Oak Bay Municipality permitted event, or whether it was a rogue event.

There was no permit.

If you invite 7 of your friends for a pickup basketball game at a school outdoor court on a weekend, do you get a permit? It’s technically required.

Inviting friends to Cattle Point might not require a permit.

It’s the accumulation of cow manure for decades that make the ecosystem special.

When Andrew Elves, a University of Victoria instructor in environmental studies and restoration of natural systems, saw pictures from a pop-up DJ show at Cattle Point last Friday in the Times Colonist, he immediately recognized the spot as one where he regularly takes students for restoration work.

Cattle Point is home to 1.6 hectares of Salish Sea maritime meadows, an extremely rare plant ecosystem.

About 30 per cent of all purple sanicle, or Sanicula bipinnatifida, in Canada grows at Cattle Point. Thirteen other plant species in the area are classified as at-risk by federal authorities.

Elves visited the site on Friday morning and found evidence of extreme soil compaction, as well as discarded cigarette butts and broken glass that were missed in the cleanup effort that night.

Elves, a music lover who met his husband at a live music event at Lucky’s, said he has nothing against music-based parties. “I like electronic music,” he said. “I love a good time, and I understand the need for the kind of spontaneous events that bring people together.”
