In downtown Victoria, Infusion Edutainment XR Amusement Park, a virtual-reality arcade, received $420,000 to create new content and buy new equipment to attract a wider base of tourists.

I wasn't aware that tourists flocked to cities to play the same VR games that a dozen places in their own home towns offer!

I wasn’t aware these grants were available to private business.

Yep, lots of them.

Looking at this a little deeper it appears as though the company plans to create its own VR content in addition to having games for tourists to play.

How long did arcades last before video game consoles became widespread? A decade, maybe.

Seems a bad business to invest in if you believe VR is gonna take off.

That Google VR thing seems never to have worked out.

Or whatever it was. I might be off.

Oculus rift/FB VR also seems to have peaked. A bunch of my friends bought them during covid and were super excited. Now I don’t hear much about them

Arcades are back. Quazars is super awesome. But VR with those sweaty headsets? Meh.

BTW Quazars does rentals too, they are sending six over for our staff party!

I wonder if Infusion Edutainment XR Amusement Park is owned by a First Nations group or person. It seems most of the grants are going to First Nations organizations.

The website is rather empty of who runs it.

One of my co-workers is First Nations and her daughter was applying for school grants. The co-worker was apprehenisve about applying to get First Nations grants or scholarships. I told them, better apply and get them, everyone else is.

I've yet to visit Quazars, but I've been to eSpot in Richmond. It's a pretty cool arcade.

I don't know how long they've been in business.

They do get their busy times.

Same funding pool:

Sooke’s ziplines

AdrenaLINE Adventure Tours will receive $100K to construct a dual-zipline to enhance the adventure park.

I don't know a single Sooke resident, not one, or exactly zero, that has gone to the Sooke zipline. Who do these ziplines even target as customers? Is there a mental wellness aspect to this, like the danger/thrill is part of a mental health program? I'm genuinely curious how these places can stay in business. Maybe it's a tourism thing? People from the prairies get to climb some big trees that they don't have back home, etc?

I think I know a couple who did it, they also said they really enjoyed it. They don't live in Sooke. I don't think you live in Sooke? Anyway, sometimes the closest things to us are the things we never experience.

Like who in Victoria has done a hop-on hop-off bus tour? It's pretty cool.

I had a meta quest 2. I prefer to look like a dork in the comfort of my own home. I'm waiting for the quest 3.
