His popularity is shockingly huge indeed.
Yeah, I was surprised learn how incredibly commercially successful he is. And that he's regarded as potentially one of the best rappers alive, or at least one of the "big 3" at the moment.
I was living in TO when he was just starting his "rap career" and was known for being the wheelchair-bound token guy on the lame degrassi remake... I was involved in a totally different music scene, but Toronto's not that big so you heard things... but at that time it was widely known that "Drake" (Aubrey) possessed the opposite of street cred. The guy grew up in Forest Hill... if you're familiar with Toronto's geography, that says it all... (and it's no coincidence that Drake is half Jewish AND grew up in Forest Hill -- big Jewish population there).
So the fact he tricked American hip hop into thinking he's "one of them" is surprising to a lot of Canadians. Drake's fakery is a big part of Kendrick's message...
