Why don't we fix this thing?

Nobody really seems to know what purposes the reservoirs serve.  Whatever it is, they can be capped and we can make something better of the space.

Plus there is a really unnecessary though road along there.

2011:

The city, according to the management plan report, is “currently discussing options with the CRD for the potential conversion of this (reservoir) space to park.”

Conversion could double the size of the existing park, extending the Garry Oak ecosystem and introducing ponds for migrating water fowl.  <  speaking of dead ducks

For now, however, the expansion goal seems more of a pipe dream.

Smith Hill Reservoir

In 1908, the city started building a reservoir on what was then known as Smith Hill. By the late 1940s, the reservoir was only used as backup for firefighting. Many years ago, it was disconnected from the system because the water quality is too poor for use. Also, a change in water pressure means the reservoir water no longer flows without the help up a pump.

I lived in Victoria for over 40 years before I even knew the Summitt Park reservoir even existed.🙄

I love it. I love the streets leading up to it, too. It would sure be nice if the reservoir itself was modified to be a more accessible/enjoyable element of the park, but we all know that would be a crazy expensive venture. I also wouldn't mind a lookout of some kind to enable better views, but again with the $$$$.

Lived in a big old house on Quadra for a few years, loved that part of town for sure.

Yeah, we'd hang out there as teenagers and 20-somethings. Super sweet spot. We never climbed the fence the enter the reservoir but I know a few guys over the years who did, and then regretted it (the water was nasty).

It's a nice park up there. I imagine the through-road is for fire truck access.

Know it all.
Citified.ca is Victoria's most comprehensive research resource for new-build homes and commercial spaces.

It seems crazy that we still don't have a dedicated park for fire trucks.

I’ve seen a couple of comments like “oh we used to climb the fence and swim there” gross. As if. Anyone who’s ever seen the water wouldn’t touch it.

Not to mention the potential danger re: urban crocodiles.

I see that VW already linked my article above and totally agree, the space could be so much better used. I think a restaurant with a outdoor swimming pool would be a huge draw.

On a sidenote I got married up there last month. Best park in the city IMO
