Signs of competitive races on Vancouver Island, traditionally an NDP stronghold
Vancouver Island, which has largely been a safe haven for New Democrats and Greens for decades, is becoming competitive in several ridings, says Royal Roads professor David Black.
“If the Conservatives pick up one, two, or even three seats — they are leaning in one, a toss-up possibility in two others — it’s fair to say the Island has become more competitive again, as it was not long ago,” Black said.
Black said polling data suggests of the 15 ridings on Vancouver Island, the B.C. NDP could retain 10 seats after the Oct. 19 election, the B.C. Greens two seats, the B.C. Conservatives are leaning towards picking up at least one seat, and two more are too close to call.
“We’re seeing a little bit more variety, a little bit more in the way of competitive races up and down the island,” Black said.
”It’s not going back to where it used to be, where all kinds of parties could win here, it’s still a relatively safe place for NDP and Green candidates, but you’re seeing certainly more opportunities for B.C. Conservative pick-ups, and that was not the case not so long ago.” Parksville-Qualicum’s Michelle Stilwell in 2017 was the last B.C. Liberal elected on the Island.
Black tends to agree with 338Canada polling that favours the NDP in Courtenay-Comox, Mid Island-Pacific Rim, Cowichan Valley, Esquimalt-Colwood, Juan de Fuca-Malahat, Langford-Highlands, Nanaimo-Gabriola Island, Oak Bay-Gordon Head, Saanich-South and Victoria-Swan Lake.

We are in big trouble, in Victoria. That’s all I’ll say for the time being.

The rest of the world isn’t so fanatical about a couple of ingredients of a complex dish. We think, because pasta sauce tastes so good in Italy, that every dish must have pasta sauce. We try too hard to emulate other places one dimensionally, and end up creating half-cocked local plans that do not account for the complexity of what makes special places and special things elsewhere work.
So we’ve got bike lanes. Great. But we have a tragic bike theft problem. We don’t have safe storage for bikes and then we publish research that claims cyclists outspend motorists. So therefore, we must discourage people driving into downtown because it’s costing us business to have more cars than bikes.
We create a pedestrian Government Street because Europe, but give locals little reason to go there, and think the summer rush from cruise ships are enough to sustain a high street.
We limit developable land, because Europeans live in high density housing, so we should densify, too, everywhere. But our transit system focuses 80% of its resources on 20% of the land mass. Then we wonder why workers don’t want to flood into downtown, if they can help it, because of the time they need to get there with inadequate road infrastructure and limited/expensive parking downtown, in the absence of reliable, timely transit.
So for every few steps we take forward, we trip up and tumble, over and over, then deny we did it, until the problem is so bad we don’t know how we got into the mess we’re in.
So obviously, of all of the big issues facing us, the next big important step to take is to reduce another travel lane on an arterial road.

We can change government federally and provincially. It’s not so easy to change direction municipally, given our fractured region tethered to an unelected second tier of government (CRD) that has an over arching agenda, that most recently wants to dedicate resources on things like further restricting the movement and efficiency of vehicles.
And when we do (Langford), you really have to wonder WHY we did that.

What I can say, is the drug epidemic in BC is not “happening everywhere,” as we are told, along with economic woes in city centres, “happening everywhere.”
It is not.
It's happening where we allow it.
