the only reason i can think of that a mentally stable individual would have refused a hotel before is the "no visitors" rule.

is that why some did not take up the hotel offers?

what is the smoking rules for hotels? is that maybe another reason someone would rather stay in a tent? so they can smoke in bed?

Parks are designated as no smoking.
If they don’t follow the rules there (or anywhere), why would they need to follow the rules in hotels?

Revenue will be flat for the city through the summer, then we'll see a second wave of Covid this fall.  Instead of managing their budget based on these projections, they are spending more than ever.

There will be a day of reckoning next year when the budget is a mess with little ability to raise taxes to cover the shortfall.  The only alternative will be a large reduction in staff.

Looking at the 2020 budget summary and the #s they provide. I'd guess the City is likely looking at a revenue shortfall in the range of 25 and 40 million (10-15% of 258mil) stemming from parking, rec, permits, conference centre, etc.

That's a pretty heavy blow. But hey, the obvious correct thing to do is take on more of an issue that wasn't created by the CoV nor should it be on the CoV to find solutions for...  :whyme:

there is also some savings in casual or seasonal staff.  hopefully staffing at the conference centre and recreation centres is at a minimum right now.

i've said here before that's it's only really parking that the city is losing out on in revenue.

Although the issue of homelessness was not created by the CoV, it certainly has been enabled by those who govern the CoV.

Parking will be the biggest loss by far. Not going to take a stab at it, but parking revenues being down 50-75% for the year if this continues is probably not a bad guesstimate at this point.

Maybe City revenue shortfall of 10-15% was overkill. 3-7% may be more realistic.

Should make paying for those "free" youth bus passes a breeze.

Keeping an eye on it... Just a teaser regarding on-street transactions, this week we will have seen about 50% compared to the same week last year.  Downtown is waking up and getting going.  Obviously not there yet but the increases week to the next week have been reassuring I think.

That's good news, Ismo! So maybe the City won't be hit as hard as we think!

that said...unfortuantely we can't say the same for residents & businesses who pay taxes

As long as the CoV continues to be governed by the current clowns on council we will be hit hard.

So, per chek news story, Dubow's justification for Victoria importing unhoused people. This is a classic, I am speechless:

Coun. Sharmarke Dubow says not supporting those coming into Victoria reminds him of when he immigrated to Canada, and saw many other countries reject newcomers.

“It really reminds me of the notion of countries closing their borders, and that pushback,” said Dubow.

Yeah that is a classic. Now Victoria is the equivalent of a country trying to regulate immigration.

So now anyone who dares to point out the multitude of problems associated with bringing as many homeless people as possible to one small city is... what? Anti-immigration? Racist?

That opinion, while on one hand completely flawed and illogical, is also deeply offensive. But, hey, spreading hate and division is pretty much the only thing these people seem to know how to do.

Anyway, tell that heartwarming little story to the next person who gets shivved on Pandora.

Are the homeless their own race now? Neat.

So when the Victoria council decided to earmark $300K for Covid relief, was all of that intended to be spent on homeless support, or was it intended to be spent on a number of initiatives that would benefit and support all residents and businesses during the crisis?

I can’t find the background rationale wording for the expenditure.

Who ever said that the current Victoria council intends to represent the Colonial rooted residents of Victoria?

Isn't every single member of council a settler?

Tried as hard as she did, Victorians refused to elect Rose Henry.

Actually, they really wanted to elect her. She punched above her weight. For many years she was a solid vote-getter, often in the top fifteen despite running half-hearted, haphazard campaigns with almost no backers or budget.

She almost beat me in 2008 and she beat a lot of other known candidates that had big budgets and supporters.

She still pulls in thousands of votes these days even though you hardly hear about her anymore.
