The closing of access between Mystic Beach and Bear Beach — an 8.9-kilometre section — comes as the trail enters the peak summer season. Hiker traffic has been heavy over the past year due to the rise in outdoor activities during the pandemic.

Dreger doesn’t just live in her van, she’s turning it into her job. Not as a heavily sponsored social media influencer, but as a security guard.
Nightly she pulls into Fennel’s RV Repair in Colwood. She sets out grass welcome mats, water bowls for the dogs and links in to the WiFi to start the cameras recording.

Vanlife not just for influencers? Influencing what? Living in a van? Is that actually a thing?

A group of Maple Ridge campers who want some first come, first serve campgrounds in Golden Ears Provincial Park, complain campsites are sitting empty.
Michael Babor is part of the group of “unhappy campers” who have been lobbying for three camping seasons to have at least some drive-up camping in one of the province’s busiest parks. Camping in the park is available only by reservation during peak season, from May to September.
The unhappy campers have started an online petition at Change.org that now has more than 11,000 signatures, calling for first-come, first-serve access to the park in their home community.
Babor is admittedly bitter that he can no longer get camping in the park in his home community, so when he visited family camping in the park, and saw numerous empty sites, he determined to do a complete audit.

No-show reservations are good financially for the 3 parties who benefit from camping fees (BCP, the reservation website contractor, and the park operator).

Should just change the system a bit. Don't show up by 9 pm, lose your spot? Any spot with 'reservation' and no equipment on it at 9 PM is then fair game?
Note that currently, your spot is held till 11 AM the next day.
Could also increase the reservation fees (make it a deposit so that the overall cost is not increased). Discourage those who don't show and encourage cancellations.

It's tough. You have a family showing up in the morning after being delayed and someone has taken their spot. Then what? I am curious how they fill the spots that have not been filled by 11 AM. Usually the campground operator can't do anything other than tell you to call the reservation company that runs it for the province.
Perhaps put kiosks in each campground to check for "unreserved" spots or better yet, have the reservation automatically cancel at 11:00 then place an orange tag on the site to indicate it is free? Still ripe for confrontation should a family show up after 11:00.

Lots of people, and I mean -a lot,- checking out the beaches and areas along the highway, many of them parking their vehicles such that passing motorists had to use one lane only.
There had been a motorcycle accident out that way as well around noon. Not a surprise considering how fast they travel along that road. Lots of activity by conservation officers as well, who had blocked off access to Sombrio and had what looked like a full-time presence there.
In short, it’s getting crazy out there, and the stunts motorists are pulling make the roadway very dangerous.
