There were basically two "big" recording studios in downtown Victoria, Keye Studios, and Seacoast Sound. These were expensive to build, expensive to operate, and dedicated facilities right in downtown Victoria.

Keye Studios was at 1207 Quadra St., and was a professional studio in every regard. They did hundreds of recordings over the years they were active starting in the '70's.

Seacoast Sound was located in the CFAX building at 823 Broughton St., in the '80's. Seacoast saw their primary fame as one of Canada's premier commercial jingle recording facilities.

Keye and Seacoast began in a time when building a professional recording studio required a massive financial investment, a lot of technical knowledge, and a lot of expensive square footage.

Although the most determined musicians could build a still rather expensive tape based recording studio in the basement of their house, the late '80's saw the need for large finances to slowly fade away as less expensive digital recording started to see the light of day, and so began the ability to build a those relatively inexpensive recording studios in basements everywhere, the ubiquitous "home studio".

Those home recording studios put massive pressure on the larger professional studios, and that pressure began to see the closure of all but the very largest and most prestigious of the big, stand alone, downtown, professional studios, none of which are left in Victoria today.

But there are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of home based recording studios on Southern Vancouver Island today, ranging from top of the line, "professional" studios, all the way to a Pro Tools or Garage Band laptop in a kids bedroom, and any trip to Long and McQuade will make apparent a large, dedicated department selling all of the equipment required to set up your own home recording studio, where anybody can make a platinum record exactly the same way Billie Eilish and her brother made their first platinum record in a bedroom of their parents house just a few years ago.

I think the somewhat dense and out of touch management of B.C. Place, in their ridiculous and very public efforts to keep people away from the area surrounding B.C. Place before and during the concerts, mistakenly confused Canuks fans with T.Swiz fans.

Not sure where the fences ended up. They put a screen on the outside of the arena.

Sure is nice they scattered the installations around downtown a little, even the Gastown steam clock got some love. Spread the crowds around a little and the money too.

I bet even I got a few hundred off the event, more than a few folks took the ferry from Fulford for this thing.

Starting January 2025, the University of Victoria will be offering a course on the newly minted billionaire.

English 240 – Major Author: Taylor Swift, will debut under Dr. Stephen Ross. The pop phenomenon will be thoroughly examined in the course, focusing on her brilliant lyricism.

While balancing his other teaching responsibilities, Ross spent the majority of his fall semester perfecting the syllabus in preparation for the course, which he has been working on for several months.

“It’s exciting and a little daunting,” he says. “There’s a shockingly large amount to learn about Taylor Swift – not just her songs but other aspects of her creative work.”

The professor points out that Swift has become more 'literary' since releasing her albums Reputation and Lover, incorporating more references and allusions from authors such as Daphne Du Maurier, F. Scott Fitzgerald and American poet Sylvia Plath into her songs.

“It’s an interesting progression across her career and we’re gonna be talking about that through the term."

Toto is literally nothing but Steve Lukather and a bunch of contract musicians.

Two of the Porcaro Brothers are deceased, the other along with David Hungate is retired and Bobby Kimball reportedly has dementia. That leaves Lukather and David Paich as the only two original members though Paich mostly doesn't tour these days.

And ZZ Topp is really just Billy Gibbons & Friends with Dusty Hill's passing a few years ago. Bands IMO should really know when to throw in the towel when they're down to an original member, his neighbor and his neighbor's friend, rather than just milking a legacy which only diminishes it in my view......

Billy Gibbons personal net worth is estimated to be around $60 million.

He probably doesn’t play live because he needs the money.

I suspect that (like our earlier Jerry Seinfeld posts) he plays live as he sees that as his singular lot in life, his life’s mission as it were.

As an aside, Gibbons is one of guitars greatest players, constantly rated and considered near the top.
This will be a classic ZZ show.

It’s still most definitely ZZ Top (minus Dusty of course) - they were always a 3-piece, and Frank is still playing drums with Billy - so it’s just Dusty that’s gone, and there’s not anything that will bring Dusty back, so this is ZZ Top!

True also. But net worth isn’t necessarily cash flow.

The cash must flow!
Rich or poor, Billy says he’s going to play until the day he dies, and not a moment less! :)

Ya, I would. It's what he does and I imagine playing a stadium is a rush you don't get otherwise.

I simply prefer to remember the ZZ Topp I saw on the Eliminator tour in 1983 in San Diego when they were in their prime.

I have no problem at all if 75 year old Billy wants to take his band on the road again - its his band - but people I know in Texas who are huge ZZT fans for obvious reasons have seen them in the last year+ and were quite disappointed. I'll stick with my memory of them before they got well into their retirement years.

Rolling Stone BTW assesses Gibbons at # 102 out of the 250 greatest guitarists of all time (Between Nancy Wilson at #103 and John Fogarty at #101)  :)
