Let's solve the "housing crisis" by building a new city

Here is a really cheap idea, with unemployment at 3.3% how about they all get jobs so they can afford to pay rent, groceries, etc! If you can't find a job in this economy something is horribly wrong

Another idea I could suggest would be to ship all the transients who came here at LDH's invitation back to their places of origin - but then again, that could be problematic, especially when you have the bleeding-heart SJW types to deal with.

 

Oh boy!

 

1. If you're living on the street with no permanent address and no access to a shower, clean clothes, or a computer, it can be pretty hard to convince someone to hire you.
2. Not every available job pays enough to cover rent and groceries, and the jobs that do pay enough generally require some sort of education or specialized skill.
3. Many people who are homeless or living in sub-standard conditions are dealing with severe mental health issues or addictions, and that can make it hard to get and keep a job.
4. At the current vacancy rate, there aren't enough rentals available even for those who do have income.

See, we are not short of land around here, we are short of political will.  I'm changing all that.

 

So Prospect Lake, BC will have a population of about 200,000 to 250,000 at full build-out.   It will take its rightful place as the Island's newest, greenest, coolest, largest, most influential city.  

Bingo.   The idea that we are somehow short of land is so completely ridiculous I don't know why it keeps coming up.   We are not short of land and will not be short of land for the next 300 years even in a city surrounded on 3 sides by water.   

We are only short of political will to use that land and high on NIMBYism.    Lots of sensible ways to develop that doesn't involve clearcutting everything.

1. show up at any of the temp labour agencies, they don't care if you have showered, clean clothes or have a computer.  I was in Lowe's the other day and the person had to check with their manager and I looked at the guy and was shocked he even had a job.  Look at all the help wanted signs in this town, if you have a pulse you are hired

2.  Guess what, maybe you have to have a roommate, we all went thru it at some point in our lives.  Don't like it - tough

3.  Ok, my option is get a job or die.  No welfare, no soup kitchens, no food banks, no enabling of any kind.  Let me ask you this, what happened 100 years ago?

Ya, you do not need an address to get a job, never have had to.  A homeless fella I have breakfast with one or two days a week works at recreation/event centre here in Victoria, no problem.

5% is considered full employment so 3.3% is very very low.

yes it is, and I thought when it was 3.8% last month was stupid low.  Keep in mind we are in the middle of winter where things are supposed to be slow

Philosophically one could make the argument that it is not compassionate at all to enable harmful, unhealthy and unproductive behaviour.

There was a time when this would have been considered survival of the fittest. It's how the human race got to where it is today... well, not today where coddling the weak and allowing them to repopulate the species while the strong are worked to death to pay for it all is the new normal.

Thanks Sparky. You are one of the more realistic voices on the forum. We need to think more about the grand children and less about the expanding universe.
