I might delete this tomorrow... but when someone said Ben and Jeremy I couldn't help but explore the concept a bit further....

Someone asked what happens if Atwell steps down. It would trigger a byelection unless an election was a few months away in which case a fill-in would do the job for a while. I'm not sure what happens in Saanich but in Victoria we have Acting Mayors that rotate throughout the year and fill in whenever the mayor is away, like on a business junket, vacation, illness etc. They are kept on a short leash so don't expect rogue behaviour or palace coups when the deputy is in the chair. Here is this year's schedule:
Acting Mayor 2015
Yes, mark your calendars, April is Mayor Loveday month.

Since we are discussing computer monitoring of a mayor and councillors on another thread,
I would like to know on this thread if there is computer monitoring going on at City Hall in Victoria.

The townhall that Councillor Isitt, the UVSS, and myself held was to continue a discussion on Ethical Investment that was started during the election. Believe it or not, divestment from fossil fuels was a top issue for many young voters in this election. I am not an expert on ethical investing but I was happy to help facilitate the discussion.
Will I be fighting to get Ethical Investing as one of the city's priorities during strategic planning? No. In my opinion, there are more pressing local issues that need to be addressed.
I do believe that we should be ethically investing our public dollars though and I will be happy to see how the discussion moves forward.
It doesn't mean giving away our scarce public dollars:

In regards to the photo...it made me laugh. You couldn't find a better photo of me though?
That expression is perfect for the photo! it's what makes it ;-)

I think we should give councillors credit for championing causes they are passionate about. Even if we don't necessarily believe them. As long as the basic work of the city does not suffer, go for it.

I find the objections to have a rather odd tone. Something like shock and surprise that this is even a topic.
I find that odd because ethical investing has been a topic of discussion since the 1980's when the boycotts of South Africa were in full swing. Every institution and even some businesses began getting flack for investing in companies that committed crimes and made decisons that harmed the environment.
To this day lots of companies tout their ethical investmen portfolios for those who believe that investing is not just about maximising profit.
I am happy to see my elected represetatives spend a little time when deciding where to place our money. Not a lot of time and effort (we have volunteer advocacy groups for that) but at least enough time to know what options are available and what the returns (positive and negative) could be.
