You don’t see fare evasion on the ferries!
Cuz the penalty could be "walk the plank".

Cuz the penalty could be "walk the plank".
Even worse, getting banned!
Worse still, being made to eat one of those egg salad sandwiches that were packaged sometime during Y2K

...The Victoria Regional Transit System has successfully rolled out a new technology that will improve predictability for passengers on April 25...
So it doesn't work the other 364/365 days of the year?

During the day McKenzie is often choked along much of its length at two lanes a side. Narrowing that down to one a side would be sheer idiocy.
And where are they going to get the extra buses and drivers to run a second rapid-bus route?

The District of Saanich wants the province to expand its free bus rides for kids program to include those age 13 to 18.
Saanich council voted unanimously to have Mayor Dean Murdock write to both B.C. Transit and the Ministry of Transportation and ask that the Get on Board program, which allows kids 12 and under to ride transit and Handydart for free, be extended to those 18 and under.
The province launched the Get on Board program in September 2021 in partnership with B.C. Transit and TransLink in the Lower Mainland. At the time, it called it the first provincewide program of its kind in Canada.
Murdock said expanding it to those 18 and under would make riding the bus more attractive for teens.
“If it’s free for youth 18 and under or 16 and under to hop on the bus, they’d be more likely to do that,” he said. “And we’re helping reinforce that public transit is a viable option for getting around.”

"Free" is never good. Student discount is sufficient.

And "free" is never free. Someone, somewhere is paying the cost.
There's no incidental cost to have some kids hop on a bus when they previously wouldn't have.

There is, absolutely. Buses have only so much capacity. Free means more use, even if it's not necessary use. Why walk 10 minutes, if you can grab a free ride? Most will want that free ride.
Know it all.

I do not want it free because I do not want friviolous use. Like Mike says, 5 and 10-minute trips. I think a kid attending Central School can just as easily walk downtown. If it's poor weather, then by all means drop the couple bucks for the bus.
And of course there is a cost if all the students that now currently pay something do not have to pay anything at the fair box.
"Free" is how we get terrible public washrooms. "Free" is how we get terrible public healthcare.
I was talking to a friend today that works for the federal govenrment downtown, but commutes in from West Shore. And they take the bus often, just to save a bit of money on downtown parking, they own a car. But the bus experience is so unpleasant, they are dreading having to go to 3 days a week in-office in the fall.

How do any of these virtues apply to BC transit?
