Last week, I was at 532 1/2 Fisgard Street. Hadn't been there before, and it was neat to see. I love that alley entrance and then the courtyard that opens up.

I wonder if those balconies/sidewalk roofs were the olden-times way of dealing with birds pooping on pedestrians? *cough*

The balconies would help shade the lower level especially if there was produce for sale.
Later on many of the store fronts had rollup canopies.
As for the birds they likely didn't hang around Chinatown, or they would end up hanging in the window.

I really enjoy Chinatowns. The last time Mrs. Sparky and I were in San Francisco we wanted to search out the smallest and hopefully authentic restaurant.
We found one that was an absolute delight.
