Hey, how's that control tower project going?
Not listed on the website anywhere with a progress update and emails to VAA are not returned about it either.
Recently drove by the area where it is going up and can't see anything from Willingdon Rd and can't get any closer.

Is it not in everyone's best interests to have these operational, regardless of when they were installed? As usual, I must be missing something.
Cost baby, cost.

Kelowna Airport ( YLW ) now has 2 carriers operating the YLW -> SEA route.
Alaska ( operated by SkyWest ) has 2 return trips per day, as well as their non stop service to LAX.
WJ ( operated by Encore Dash 8 ) will only operate 1 daily starting mid Feb, right now daily ex 23 ( tues/ wed )
With their code share with Delta, I'm sure AS is impressed.

US destinations for YLW include, SEA, LAX, PDX and LAS

What are we not doing at YYJ? Is their winter tourism that strong where can afford four US destinations? Mostly outbound interest? Mostly inbound interest? Both?
Are they just captive, whereas we have too much traffic to YVR that makes YYJ impractical, still?

Good questions for Ms Brown to double down on.
My next door neighbor left last Thursday for Phoenix for 10 days. Flew YYJ to SEA and on wards to PHX.
Geoff had a sad excuse years ago that the ferry to Vancouver and the clipper " steals " passengers. . . .
In my earlier post, I miss used airport codes, Phoenix Sky Harbour is PHX not PDX, thats Portland.

Make YYJ a more attractive option than BCF -> YVR and traffic will increase. It's only sometimes more attractive, and financially it gets measurably less attractive the larger the group travelling. Flight costs is a big one, but its not the only one (sometimes the price difference is negligible).
There are other financial costs that can play a factor, and time is a factor too; crappy connection times (ie. can't get to YVR fast enough for very early connections, silly recommendations such as being at YYJ 2-3 hours early, any delays in security through YYJ, etc.
That said, its not a level playing field and due to that its not really a fair comparison to YLW who competes with nobody.

You avoid the hassle of a connection. And unlike Victoria, there’s no ferry to miss.

8 hours of driving plus the parking cost. I dunno that many would do that
Plus in winter driving the Coquihalla or Hope-Princeton is not the easiest. Parking at YVR is quite costly. Family can sometimes drive siblings to the Kelowna airport as well. One problem with YYJ is that it is on the Saanich Peninsula not somewhere east, like Langford. If in Langford it would have been better placed to get up-Island customers. Since YYJ is located where it is, YCD was been growing and a few years ago edged ahead of Comox for annual passenger counts.

I wonder if people in the Okanagan just drive to YVR?
You avoid the hassle of a connection. And unlike Victoria, there’s no ferry to miss.
I've noticed over the last year or so the change of aircraft type and freq on the YLW-YVR route.
WJ uses almost all 737 service, AC has moved a couple flights to 737 and Airbus on the odd flight. Air North and Flair both use 737 aircraft.
With that many flights and carriers, flying to YLW is like grabbing the bus, with near hourly service between the carriers.
Not sure what the fares are leveled at, but if many skip the drive to the OK valley and to the ski hills.... maybe it is a savings on time and money.

The nature of air travel since 9/11 means it's nothing like the bus.
Well I wasn't meaning " as easy as getting on the bus " but more so, many seats available and freq of flights back and forth.
I'm sure with a flooded market, the prices shouldn't be out of reach. Just didn't think YLW would be pumping out so many 737 flights on a 45 min jont to YVR.

On the VAA website, under the master plan
YYJ's top destinations in 2019 in alphabetical order were...
Halifax, NS
Kahului, USA
Los Angeles USA
Palm Springs USA
Phoenix USA
Regina SK
San Francisco USA
Saskatoon SK - where I head about 2 to 3 times a year
Winnipeg MB
Only Winnipeg MB has seasonal, 3 days a week service this summer from YYJ which has been a increase from past summers.
In 2019, the VAA forecasted a 102% in 2023,107% increase in 2024 and had predicted a 112% in 2025 from 2019 numbers.....I don't think the VAA hit the 2023/24

YLW released their YTD annual passenger enplane numbers for 2024
Record breaking 2.133, 582 passengers
December was there record breaking month of the year at over 211,493 passengers.
From their Facebook page, they go on to explain the success and growth of the airport over the last year.
YYJ is posed to barely crack 1.8 million and might fall behind to 12th place behind up and coming YQB, ( Quebec City ) as they grow so fast lately

Just noticed over the last week + that Jazz has a number of Dash Q400's out of service and most regional and inter provincial service is being operated by their CRJ 900's, including YYJ for half the flights to here.
Pure speculation but I wonder if Jazz is short staffed on Q400 pilots at the YVR base? On a YVR-YYJ Q400 flight currently made up of flight crew based in Calgary & Toronto. I doubt SOP is for Toronto based crews to normally cover west coast flying.

https://www.abbynews...k-again-7775919. About even with 2019 for Abby. Losing Swoop was a big blow after 2023, when flights were an all time high. Flair flies from Edmonton, which is nice for those wanting to avoid YVR and keeping air ticket prices somewhat competitive.
