75-unit rental completes in Sooke: https://victoria.cit...-charters-road/
From the Province:
Indigenous families, elders and people in Sooke now have access to 75 below-market homes, with the opening of a new purpose-built rental building at 2170 Charters Rd.
“With this opening, we’re providing peace of mind and hope for families and people who need a little extra help to make ends meet,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. “These new homes will not only provide safe places for them to live in, but also enable them to participate fully in the community without having to worry about very high rents.”
The new four-storey apartment building has a mix of studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom homes. Thirteen units are rented at the provincial shelter rate for people with very low incomes. The building is also pet-friendly, allowing cats and small dogs.
This project is the result of a partnership between the Province, through BC Housing, the federal government, through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Capital Regional District, and M’akola Housing Society.
“Through the National Housing Strategy, we are investing in affordable housing across the country, including right here in Sooke,” said Sean Fraser, federal Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. “I am proud that we supported these 75 new homes, which mark a new chapter for those who will live in them. Everyone deserves a safe place to call home and we are committed to making that a reality for all Canadians.”
M’akola Housing Society will operate the building and will prioritize Indigenous individuals, seniors and families for the homes. Non-Indigenous residents are also welcome. People started moving into their new homes in October 2023.
“These affordable homes are a tremendous help to people who are already struggling to get by,” said Ravi Parmar, MLA for Langford-Juan de Fuca. “Affordable Indigenous housing is needed all over the province. We are grateful to partners involved for bringing these homes to Sooke, so people can stay in the community they call home.”
This project is part of a $19-billion housing investment by the B.C. government. Since 2017, the Province has more than 77,000 homes delivered or underway, including 278 homes in Sooke.

Saanich council Monday night unanimously endorsed sending to public hearing a proposal for the development at 4126, 4128 and 4130 Glanford Ave.
Coun. Colin Plant noted that the project requires a hearing, as it does not comply with the official community plan, which earmarks the area for single-family homes. “But townhouses next to a school with a large field behind it and transit in front of it, I think, gives us a lot to consider.”
Coun. Nathalie Chambers said if the proposal had been compliant with the OCP, it would have been an ideal project to bypass the public-hearing stage. “It’s exciting for me to see the evolution of Glanford Avenue,” she said.
The three-storey project requires rezoning and an OCP amendment.

I don't think Glanford itself should be SFH. Townhomes, rowhomes seems to fit well. The road was supposed to be upgraded years ago, really should get moving on that.

Ya, it's right here.
Too bad they cannot take some schoolyard too, all school yards are much larger than generally required these days. I doubt there are organized sports like soccer taking place on both those fields at once, ever.

I've never really understood the reason for giant front lawns on multi-unit rental buildings. It's not as though the residents use these spaces. They really just add maintenance costs.
Agree. They don't even add any beauty or any significant buffer. They have no good reason to exist.

Council voted 7-2 to approve a rezoning application to allow six single-family homes at 4590 Lochside Dr., currently the site of a single 1956 house.
“This is a reasonable, moderate compromise from what was initially devised,” said Coun. Colin Plant, noting 12 single-family homes were pitched for the site several years ago.
“Any sort of development in this site is likely going to have some concerns from the public, and I share their concern.”
But Plant said district staff have said there will be safeguards for the Lochside Trail during construction and to ensure it does not spell the end of the agricultural Blenkinsop Valley.

Pretty sure 6 houses won’t kill the Valley.

This redevelopment of a large lot property has been posted for years.
On the support side it is adjacent to current housing and opposite the local school.
On the negative side is the challenging access. It is ALR and when do you stop chipping away at the edges.
Six houses seems reasonable.
