That would require a 2 kilometre high gondola tower on the Colwood side. We could use the Sussex spire on the downtown side, but there may be delays when a dirigible is docked.

But if it goes to the windmill at Ogden Point (the one providing shore power) it can merge with the cruise passenger gondola.

The tourism dollars! Maybe the skywalk is too far of a future connection. Might need a midpoint at Butchart.

Maybe it should be a hydro foil, and it can creep up Latoria to a parking lot on the Boys and Girls property in Metchosin?

Lynn and Gord Greenhow have been watching Royal Bay grow for years, as hundreds of new housing units sprouted across the former gravel quarry below their Colwood home.

So they were delighted Thursday when a new retail complex finally opened where they could buy groceries or a bottle of wine and later this summer enjoy a restaurant meal and other services close to home.

“We’ve been waiting a year for this to open and it’s so nice to be able to walk here,” said Lynn as she picked up fruit and deli items at the new Quality Foods grocery store. “We’ve been looking down into Royal Bay since it was a gravel pit,” added Gord. “We don’t have to use the car and it’s nice to walk.”

Over the coming months, ScotiaBank, Megson FitzPatrick/Acera Insurance Services, Pure Integrative Pharmacy, Royal Bay Dental, Next Level Childcare, Noodlebox and Pizza Pizza are expected to follow.

Greater Victoria city looks to create its own version of Granville Island

Colwood’s Eats and Beats Beach Party kicks off the shift this weekend

“Once Royal Beach is fully built-out, it’s going to be pretty phenomenal,” said Kobayashi. “But we also want to start getting people used to this being where the commercial events will be. We’re also talking about doing other major events with Arts and Culture Colwood Society, so it really will be the gathering place.”

While the final amenity designs for the area have yet to be finalized by developers and property owners Seacliff Properties and Reliance Properties, Colwood Council approved the area’s parks master plan in April.

The site is expected to include a waterfront restaurant, covered public plaza, permanent amphitheatre, trails, nature parks, and ideally a mix of local businesses.

“Our vision is having it set up very much like Granville Island,” Kobayashi said.

Will be interesting to see what they have to say. As I pointed out the other day, Jon has been lamenting interest rates and construction costs and stated that a hundred-plus developments have been put on hold. With the TD predicting rates are going to continue to rise and inflation not yet under control I wonder how this may/may not impact RB.

Everyone’s getting ready for the 2026 boom.

We all know rates are high and going higher for 2024-2025. The focus now is on being ready for when they start to fall back down.

Royal Beach has been renamed Beachlands.

Release:

Colwood, British Columbia (July 29, 2023) – Canada’s upcoming premier destination community has a new name. Joined by Colwood Mayor Doug Kobayashi, Reliance Properties and Seacliff Properties – who grabbed headlines for their joint investment of more than $1.2 billion in the city – announced a new identity for their master-planned seaside community. Royal Beach is now The Beachlands to encapsulate the vast scale of the oceanfront location and all that coastal living has to offer.

“More than a beach, this expansive coastline will become Canada’s next coveted destination, one that sets an extraordinary standard for seaside communities,” said Jon Stovell, President and CEO of Reliance Properties, a multi-award-winning BC developer with notable projects in Victoria. “With all levels of government investing in the surrounding area, The Beachlands is a name that captures the allure and magic of a 134-acre oceanfront and shoreline that stretches 1.4 kilometres.”

The rebrand comes as onsite work begins on The Beachlands and the development partners prioritize and fulfill regional community benefits, including hosting the City of Colwood’s popular annual Eats & Beats Beach Party on its site, which is where they unveiled the rebranding.

“Immersing ourselves and engaging with the communities in which we build is critical to The Beachlands’ development team, so we prioritized cultural and community programming to create an energy and buzz for the enjoyment of Greater Victoria residents and visitors,” said Georgia Desjardins, Director of Development of Seacliff Properties, a company with five largescale master-planned communities underway on Vancouver Island. “Hosting the city’s Eats & Beats festival is a hint of what’s to come at The Beachlands.”

Colwood Mayor Doug Kobayashi agrees: “Colwood residents understand that our waterfront is a cherished treasure that defines our community. We’re excited to work with our partners at Seacliff Properties and Reliance Properties to realize Colwood’s potential as an exceptional cultural destination that offers a west coast experience like no other, with parks, plazas, dining, and shopping all energized by vibrant community events like the Eats & Beats Beach Party that we’re enjoying today. Welcome to The Beachlands!”

Approvals & Applications Underway

The Beachlands will be a collection of neighbourhoods totalling 2,850 homes, plus hundreds of job spaces in commercial buildings and retail spaces. The developers recently submitted subdivision applications for the first two phases, plus a development permit application for a 12,000-square-foot commercial building at Metchosin and Latoria Boulevard which will house a public café and The Beachlands’ sales centre. They will soon seek a development permit for two multi-family buildings and townhomes for the second phase.

Colwood also recently approved the parks’ master plan. More than 47 acres of The Beachlands will be designed and dedicated as public parks and greenspace, some which is already open to the public temporarily while the permanent park improvements are constructed over the phased development of the site.

Joking aside I actually like it. I didn’t realise there was so much space. But once you get rid of ferry / gondola parking it opens it up a lot.

A 134-acre seaside development in Colwood once known as Royal Beach has been rechristened the Beachlands, in part to differentiate it from the Royal Bay development next door.

Mayor Doug Kobayashi joined representatives of Reliance Properties and Seacliff Properties for the announcement Saturday on the stage of the city’s annual Eats & Beats Beach Party.

Reliance chief executive Jon Stovell said the new name better reflects the 1.5-km waterfront area within the $1.2-billion development.

“Our waterfront is a cherished treasure that defines our community,” Kobayashi said in a statement, adding that the city is excited to work with the developers to realize Colwood’s potential as a cultural destination.

The two Vancouver-based developers have submitted subdivision applications for the first two phases of the Beachlands, along with a development permit application for a 12,000-square-foot commercial building located at Metchosin Road and Latoria Boulevard which will act as the development’s sales centre.

IMO sometimes the best move is the one you don't make.....Beachlands? Hm....sounds like a Comedy Central version of the "Simpson's" parody of MacGyver. Replace MacGyver with "Beachlands!" and you get the picture:

Yes folks tonight on Beachlands! .....it's the case of........the missing sun screen! "Royal Bay" was better. Way better.
