You are ignoring opportunity costs when you say that it doesn't cost very much. Had the proposed museum etc Gone in here, the space could be more useful than as a shortcut.

There was an opportunity to create something here and the city would have met very little opposition.
This is not just a little park. It demonstrates what little inniative and creativity the city has. Not to mention balls.

Yes the upgrade are nice, cosmetically. I have walked through it a few times to explore the progress. But every time I was there, the place was empty.

I like that the Cridge Park is empty most of the time, just as is the upper section of Pandora Green east of Cook Street. I consider empty green space to be a time to breathe while walking or driving by. We don't need everything to look busy. Sometimes less is more.

^ Public space is only useful if someone uses it. The issue with this area is that there is too much open space. Square is in front of Astoria, St. Ann's, Thunderbird Park, Beacon Hill Park are all within a block of this spot. If you want to encourage less than optimal use of public space than this is how you do it.

^^Yes, let's spend hundreds(?) of thousands of dollars on a place where nobody goes. It makes a lot of sense when you put it like that.

For a truly huge waste of money nothing can possibly beat the $500,000 about to be spent on "plazas" and meandering paths in the heart of Crackton...er I mean the 900 block of Pandora. The decisions of our local government truly boggle my mind some times. :o

...the landscaping is interesting and the night time lighting actually invites people to go in and makes it a safe short cut for folks to get to the Atria.

And the CRD would have us believe that lights only attract crime.

Geez Louise, what a region this would be if Victoria's left hand knew what the right hand was doing :(

I think people are being too hard on this little park. I'd much rather see improvements to existing spaces than the arbitrary creation of new spaces that nobody needs or wants. Also, methinks it isn't realistic to expect a little park like this to be crowded with activity around the clock. It's a small space so if it gets used occasionally and doesn't go to hell during the intervals then I can live with that.

Lights on a bridge attract crime. Seals will wait in the water down below and when they see someone jogging by alone... BAM!*

There are no seals in the Humboldt Valley, need I remind you.

*if not "BAM!" then whatever sound seals make when they pounce on something with criminal intent

^ True enough. The lights also probably discourage the racoons though I am not sure what the impact will be on the Unicorns.

The unicorns followed the beavers in the last great Humboldt Valley exodus of 2006 brought on by construction of several condos.

I am with Gum Gum. This was a huge waste of money and no one goes there.

Except the people on this forum that go there and say that nobody goes there.

Nobody would know if anybody goes there unless people go there and confirm that nobody goes there.

If money is wasted in a park with no one around, does it make a sound?

I went by there the other day and saw some people wandering. They weren't doing anything, except looking bored. Must have been VV'ers doing a head count.
